Sophomore Sydney Wiese has been named the Pac-12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week, after helping Oregon St. to a weekend sweep of the Arizona schools, which also elevated the Beavers to #7 in this week's AP Poll.
Wiese had 15 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, and a steal, in a team high 37 minutes in Friday night's 70-64 win over 12th ranked Arizona St., a loss that didn't drop the Sun Devils in the rankings, and then followed that up with a 20 point, 5 assist (both game highs) performance Sunday morning to lead the Beavers to a 73-48 win over Arizona. Wiese shot 70% from the field against the 'Cats, and an even better 75% from 3 point range (6 of 8).
The sweep clinched a first day bye in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament in Seattle for Oregon St., who is now 23-2, and 13-1 in the Pac-12, and has a full 2 game lead over Arizona St. (who they also have the tie-breaker over, having swept the season against the Sun Devils), and California, and Stanford, both of whom visit Gill on the last week of the regular season.
Wiese is the 3rd Beaver to be named the Pac-12 Player of the Week this season, joining Jamie Weisner and Ruth Hamblin (twice).
Oregon St. makes the Rocky Mountain road trip this week, beginning in Boulder Friday evening to face Colorado, and then a stop in Salt Lake City for another morning game, against Utah on the way home..
