Baseball Open Thread: Oregon State @ UCLA (Game 1)

#7 Oregon State (30-8, 10-2) @ #23 UCLA (22-14, 10-5) - 6:00 PM (PDT) - Jackie Robinson Stadium, Los Angeles, CA - 1240 KEJO/1550 KKOV/1550kkad.com

Oregon State and UCLA meet at 6:00 PM west coast time tonight to begin the three game series between the Beavers and Bruins. After today's game, the two teams will meet again tomorrow for a 2:00 PM first pitch.

Oregon State comes into tonight's game with a record of 30-8. The Beavers have good wins against Connecticut, Arizona State (3), and Stanford (3). Oregon State has other solid victories against Gonzaga (2), Oregon, Long Beach State, and Arizona.

The Beavers are currently on a one game winning streak after defeating Portland, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon. Before the win, the Beavers had a 11 game winning streak snapped at the hands of Washington State on Saturday.

The Bruins come into the game with a record of 22-14. UCLA's good wins have came against San Francisco (3), Stanford, and UC Irvine. The Bruins are currently on a one game winning streak as well after defeating UC Irvine on Tuesday.

In UCLA's last game, the Bruins blew out the UC Irvine Anteaters with a 6-1 victory. The Bruins dropped two of three games last weekend at Stanford, dropping to third place in the Pac-10. After this weekend's series with the Beavers, the Bruins will return to action on Tuesday when they face the Pepperdine Waves on the road.

The Beavers will start Sam Gaviglio (7-1, 1.68), while UCLA will send out Gerrit Cole (4-4, 2.78). In Gaviglio's last start, Sam went 6.2 innings, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits. In Cole's last start, Gerrit went 6.1 innings, giving up 6 runs (All earned) on 9 hits.

For tomorrow's game, Josh Osich (5-1, 3.30) is Oregon State's probable starter, while the Bruins have listed Trevor Bauer (8-1, 1.42) as their scheduled starter.

Last year, UCLA went 51-17. The Bruins went 2-1 against the Beavers in 2010.

This season, UCLA began the season 7-2 before dropping five of their next six games. That stretch dropped the Bruins out of the polls, but they slowly climbed their way back in after big Pac-10 series wins against USC, Washington, Washington State, and Arizona. If the season ended today, UCLA would likely be a 2 Seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The weather is is expected to be great for the duration of the game. The Weather Channel calls for 67° and high winds at 6:00 PM, with the temperature dropping to 61° near the end of the game. The forecast for the rest of the weekend looks great, with high temperatures projected in the 70s on Saturday and in the 80s for Sunday.

Go Beavers!
