#7 Oregon State (29-8) @ Portland (14-22) - 3:00 PM (PDT) - Pilot Stadium at Joe Etzel Field, Portland, OR - 1240 KEJO/1550 KKOV/1550kkad.com
Oregon State and Portland meet at 3:00 PM west coast time today for a quick mid-week matchup before the Beavers fly south to Los Angeles. After today's game, the Beavers are off until Friday when they will face the UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles, California.
Oregon State comes into today's game with a record of 29-8. The Beavers have good wins against Gonzaga (2), Connecticut, Oregon, Long Beach State (2), Arizona (2), Arizona State (3), and Stanford (3). Their bad losses have came against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Seattle University, UC Santa Barbara, and Washington State.
The Beavers are currently on a one game losing streak after falling to Washington State on Saturday. Before the loss, the Beavers had won eleven in a row, their longest streak of the season.
The Pilots come into the game with a record of 14-22. Portland's only good win came against Oregon, but the Pilots have do have other solid wins against George Fox and Hawaii (2). In the first meeting between the Pilots and Beavers this season, Oregon State blew out Portland with an 11-1 victory.
In Portland's last game, the Pilots fell by a score of 9-0 against the San Diego Toreros on Sunday. After today's game, the Pilots will return to the diamond tomorrow to face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene.
Both team's starters for today's game are TBA. In Oregon State's last Tuesday game, James Nygren (6-1, 3.22) got the start for the Beavers. However, Nygren started for the Beavers on Thursday night, so it is highly unlikely that he will get the ball again today. A likely participant to get the call for the Beavers would be Ben Wetzler (5-1, 4.38), since he has not pitched since April 17th at Stanford.
In Portland's last Tuesday game, Brent Miller (3-2, 5.16) got the start for the Pilots.
Last year, Portland went 34-18. The Pilots went 0-3 against the Beavers in 2010.
This season, Portland started out 6-0, but they have sinced been plagued by poor pitching and fielding. Since the 6-0 start, Portland is 8-22. An at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament is a lost cause, but Portland would love to upset an in-state rival at their home field.
The weather is is expected to be okay for the duration of the game. The Weather Channel calls for 53° and a few showers at 3:00 PM, with the temperature rising to 54° near the end of the game. The forecast for this weekend in Los Angeles looks great, with high temperatures projected in the 70s for the Saturday and Sunday games.
I will be braving out the conditions today on the Bluff, and will be back tomorrow with a recap and pictures.
Go Beavers!
