Baseball Open Thread: OSU @ Long Beach State (Game 1)

Oregon State (13-3) @ Long Beach State (9-7) - 6:30 PM (PDT) - Blair Field, Long Beach, CA - 1240 KEJO/1550 KKOV

Oregon State and Long Beach State meet at 6:30 PM west coast time today to begin the three game seires between the Beavers and 49ers. The road trip will be a quick one, as Oregon State returns home on Tuesday for a two game series with the Seattle Redhawks.

Oregon State comes into Long Beach with an overall record of 13-3. The Beavers opened up the season in Fresno, where they went 2-2. After the FSU Tournament, the team traveled to Texas, where they went 3-1. Oregon State then came home for a eight game homestand, where they won all eight games against Hartford (4), Oregon, New Mexico State, and VMI (2).

The 49ers come into the series with an overall record of 9-7. Their wins have came against Cal State Fullerton, Arizona, USC, Oregon (2), Hawaii, Rice, San Francisco, and Pepperdine. Their losses have came against Cal State Fullerton (2), Loyola Marymount, Arizona (2), Oregon, and California. Looking at their schedule so far this season, 9-7 is a great record against that tough of competition. Fullerton, USC, Oregon, Hawaii, Pepperdine, Arizona, and California should all be tournament teams come May.

The Beavers will send right hander Sam Gaviglio (3-0, 0.00) to the mound, while the 49ers will start right hander Andrew Gagnon (2-2, 1.30). The pitching matchup is considered to be the best in the nation this weekend, with both pitchers being highly touted after great starts to the season.

Last year, Long Beach State went 23-32 and went 2-1 against Oregon State.

The weather is is expected to be great for the duration of the game. The Weather Channel calls for 61° and mostly sunny at 6:30 PM, with temperatures dropping to 56° near the end of the game.

After tonight's meeting, the Beavers and 49ers will continue their series tomorrow at 5:30 PM Pacific. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 PM Pacific.

Go Beavers!
