Beavers Score Early and Late, Defeat VMI 13-3

Beavers 13
Keydets 3
Box Score

Beavers starting pitcher, freshman Ben Wetzler, went 6 innings while giving up two runs (Both earned) on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts.

The Keydets sent Jason Farley to the mound, who lasted 4 innings after giving up one run in the second frame and six more runs in the fourth. Farley's final line was seven runs (6 earned) on 9 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Farley got the loss and is now 0-4 on the season.

The Beavers first got on the board in the bottom half of the second inning. Ryan Dunn leadoff the inning with a single, but was then thrown out at second on a fielder's choice. Danny Hayes, who reached first on the choice, then advanced to second on a passed ball. And after a Kavin Keyes fly out, Carter Bell doubled down the right field line to bring home Hayes and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

Oregon State found their offense again in the fourth inning, this time getting started with a bunt for a single by Ryan Barnes. Ryan Dunn then got aboard on a swinging bunt, and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. However, the inning looked to be lost after a Danny Hayes strikeout and a baserunning blunder, leaving runners at second and third, this time with two outs.

But Jason Farley helped the Beavers out, moving his shoulder ever so slightly after becoming set towards the plate. Farley was charged with a balk, one runner moved to third, the other scored, and the Beavers led 2-0. The balk proved to be the undoing of the Keydets, as the Beavers went on to add five more runs, all with two outs. Farley did survive the inning, but was pulled prior to the fifth.

In the top half of the fifth inning, the Keydets cut into the Beaver lead, adding two runs of their own thanks to a Justin Hess 2 RBI single. Oregon State would get the two runs back however in the bottom half of the inning on a Garrett Nash 2 RBI single, and just like that, the Beaver had a 9-2 lead.

The Beavers weren't finished though, as they added four more runs in the seventh inning thanks to a throwing error by the pitcher. With the bases loaded, Parker Berberet hit a comebacker to the mound. The VMI pitcher threw the ball home, looking for a force out, but the throw went wide right and all the runners scored on the play. Dylan Jones then scored Berberet from thrid on a groundout, and the Beavers took a 13-2 lead into the final two innings.

VMI's final run came in the ninth after a leadoff double by Eric Mayers. Mayers would then advance to third on a passed ball, and eventually score on a RBI Infield Single by Cody Holder. However, the Keydets would go quietly after that, and the Beavers got the 13-3 win.

The Beavers improved to 12-3 with the victory and extened their winning streak to nine games. VMI dropped to 9-7-1 with the loss.

Oregon State will finish the Oregon State Tournament this afternoon with a doubleheader. First up will be VMI at 12:05 PM, followed by New Mexico State (12-5) at 4:05 PM.
