Oregon St. takes the court for the first time this season Friday night at 7 PM at Gill Coliseum, for an exhibition game against Pacific University from Forest Grove, OR. The Boxers are a Division III program, coming off a 4-21 campaign, so a repeat of Arizona's season opening loss to Seattle Pacific, and subsequent close call against Humboldt St., seems unlikely.
The Beavers and the Boxers have met 10 times previously, dating all the way back to 1902, when Oregon St. won 25-5. Pacific's only win came in 1916, when they defeated Oregon St. 34-25. However, the teams haven't met since 1934, when Oregon St. won 53-11.
It's the Beavers' 111th. season, and the first where all 16 players were recruited by coach Craig Robinson.
Jared Cunnigham, whose' 128 steals in his first 2 years is second only to Gary Payton's 130 in school history in the first two years of a career, leads the Beavers, and was elected one of the team captains, along with Kevin McShane and Angus Brandt.
There's no television, and not even any radio, since this game was scheduled opposite the first round of the Oregon state high school football playoffs. As such, an open thread wouldn't serve much purpose. But feel free to discuss your hopes for the season in the comments section. But it will provide an opportunity for the Beavers to shake things down before next Saturday's "counting" opener at Gill Coliseum against Cal-State Bakersfield.
