Final Score: Washington 15, Oregon State 6 (Box Score)
The game got off to a horrible start on Saturday, and never got much better, as the Beavers lost 15-6 to the Washington Huskies at Husky Ballpark.
Entering the game, the Beavers' largest margin of defeat in the season had been 3 runs. However, the Huskies quickly built an immense lead in the game, using a grand slam and a three run home run to build a 9-0 lead by the second inning.
Oregon State's starer, Greg Peavey, recorded just five outs in the game, while giving up the nine runs, all earned. He walked three and struck out one-- and threw 63 pitches.
Things started to settle down after the Huskies' nine run barrage, but Oregon State's relief pitchers-- Mark Grbavac, James Nygren, and Sam Gaviglio-- all gave up two runs a piece.
But if you take out your scissors and cut the first two innings off of the box score, we have a 6-6 tie and we go to extra innings, where the Beavers are 2-1 so far this season.
The Beavers did mount a late charge in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Adalberto Santos hit a double with the bases loaded to score all three of those runs. And in the seventh, Ryan Ortiz hit a three-run home run with Joey Wong and Michael Miller on base.
Miller, by the way, hit in the leadoff spot for the first time of the season and went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Only Ryan Ortiz had more hits-- he went 3-for-4, with two runs scored.
The Beavers return to Husky Ballpark today for the rubber game of the series, scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. Jorge Reyes will be on the hill for the Beavers, with freshman Andrew Kitterage getting the start for the Huskies.
