ASU Game 2 Thoughts

I still remember the night in Omaha last year when the Beavers completely  dismantled the Sun Devils. It was one of the most surreal games to take in-- Oregon State jumping out to an early lead and continuing to tack on runs to the outright favorite to win the title. Take a look at the line score from the game last year in Omaha:

And compare it to last night's linescore:

It's hard to believe that Oregon State actually beat Arizona State worse than they did that night in Omaha.  And in Omaha, the Beavs had Mike Stutes on the mound. OSU beat ASU on Saturday behind freshman Tanner Robles, sophomore Blake Keitzman, and freshman Taylor Starr.

Some other notes from the game:

  • Robles... What a great outing for the young freshman against one of the best teams in the nation. He had excellent command of his fastball the entire night, using it as an out pitch against the talented ASU hitters. He walked for and struck out five on the night in his six innings of work.
  • The long ball... Joey Wong went deep in the third with a two run homer to right, Lonnie Lechelt hit a three run homer in the fourth to left, and Jordan Lennerton hit a two run homer in the ninth to add to the Beavers' lead.
  • Defense... Drew George had two errors at third base, but the Beavers still won the defensive battle Saturday. ASU had four errors, resulting in five Oregon State runs.
  • Believe it or not, only one Beaver had a multi-hit game, and that was catcher Ryan Ortiz. He went 3-for-5 on the night.

No team has swept Arizona State at home since 1997.... the Beavers have a legitimate chance to do that today with Jorge Reyes on the hill...

GO BEAVERS!
