Friday Morning News and Notes

Fall practice gets underway today at 2:00 in Corvallis. The Beavers and Arizona are the first Pac-10 teams to open practice, as the Beavers play their first game of the season on a Thursday, instead of a Saturday. Only eight teams in the nation have an earlier start.

As fall practice rolls on, we will continue to look at some of the battles for starting jobs, but the main ones going into camp seem to be at Quarterback and Tight End. Senior Ryan Gunderson, who started the Civil War in '05, will compete for  the job with sophomores Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao. Canfield is the heavy favorite right now, but things could change.  There are four possible candidates at tight end, including Brady Camp, Howard Croom, and John Reese. Some underclassmen will obviously battle for some playing time during camp, but most of the starting roles appear to be set. We'll see how that changes in the coming weeks.

Raising Reser is on track and will be completed by the season opener against Utah. Most recently, a 30x80 video screen was erected on top of the new south end zone bleachers, and they've been testing it out in the last few days. I happened to check out the webcam when they were testing a "Touchdown Beavers" clip. I have a screenshot saved on my other computer, and I'll try to get it posted tonight.

In honor of practices starting today, here's a countdown timer that I'll be installing at the top of this page shortly:

GO BEAVERS!
