The Beavers first scrimmage of fall camp went off without any problems-- there were no injuries to report. Yvenson Bernard sat out for obvious reasons, and Sammie Stroughter is still absent. If he would have been there, he probably wouldn't have played much either, but that doesn' matter now. Sammie and Yvenson are the main players that were out of the scrimmage, but there are a handful of others who are plagued by injuries or grades at this point.
The quarterback battle continues between Lyle Moevao and Sean Canfield, although freshman Brennan Sim from Sunset High School had the best numbers in the scrimmage. Mike Riley told Cliff Kirkpatrick of the Gazette Times that a decision will come early next week, but it's going to be a tough one unless someone really steps up in the next few practices. They're two different quarterbacks with different styles of play, so it could be a matter of which style the offensive staff feels most comfortable with. Even though both these guys are worthy of the starting job, making the decision as early as possible is important for the team. It helps out the offensive line so they'll know who they're blocking for (Canfield= lefty, Moevao= righty), and it will help the team "gel" around one guy. If we get past the Utah game and decide things aren't working, we still can switch things up. Sean and Lyle are both good guys, and I think they'll respect and trust the decision the coaching staff makes.
