The Salem News brings us this tidbit today about former Oregon State rower Chris Callaghan:
RIO DE JANEIRO - Former Oregon State rower Chris Callaghan won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games on Thursday helping the U.S. men's eight with coxswain to victory by more than 10 seconds.
The crew rowed to a two-second lead in the first 500 meters of the race and continued to pull away from the competition for a 10.89-second victory.
The U.S. finished with a time of 6:22.47, followed by Brazil in 6:33.36 and Argentina in 6:39.03.
The gold medal for Callaghan's boat was one of four rowing medals the U.S. earned Thursday among the 10 won at the regatta.
Callaghan, a native of Tualatin, Ore., rowed for the Beavers from 2002-04 before moving on to national team.
In 2006, Callaghan helped his men's four with coxswain to a fourth place finish at the World.
