After a disappointing showing in the Top of the World Classic, the Men's Basketball team returns home to take part in the "Beaver Invitational", a three team, round-robin style tournament. Participating teams include the Beavers, Idaho State, and Portland. The Beavers will play Idaho State in the first game, then Idaho State will play Portland tomorrow, and the tournament will end on Sunday when Oregon State plays Portland.
The Bengals are coming off three losses at Iowa, BYU, and Long Beach State. Idaho State managed to take Long Beach State into overtime, but wound up losing by five. Their lone win came on Wednesday over Montana State- Southern. We only have access to Idaho State's stats thru their first three games, but in those games, they are being led by Chron Tatum, a 6-8 sophomore forward, with 14.7 points a game. He scored in double figures in each of the Bengals first three games. Matt Stucki is second in scoring for the Bengals with 12.7.
The Bengals were being outscored by 13.6 points in their first three games, but with a seven point win from Wednesday added into the stats, that number will change for the better.
Oregon State out-rebounded every team except for Colorado State at the Top of The World Classic, and the Bengals are getting out-rebounded by an average of six boards per game. Oregon State's top rebounders-- Marcel Jones, Roeland Schaftenaar, and Seth Tarver should look to do some damage on the glass tonight.
The Beavers are being led in the scoring column by 6-8 senior Marcel Jones, who is scoring 18 points per game. The Tarver brothers come in at second and third, with Seth scoring 14.7 per game, and Josh with 7.3. Seth is the only Beaver to score in double figures for all three games this season, and had a career high of 16 points against USC Upstate.
Although Marcel Jones is averaging 18 points a game, he had 23 against both Alaska and USC Upstate. Against USC Upstate, he went 10 of 11 shooting, with all 10 baskets coming in a row. In his other game against Colorado State, he was limited to 8 points in 22 minutes. He's 94 points away from becoming the 34th Beaver to score 1,000 points in his career. While he probably wont score that many tonight, we're looking forward to the day he does. And if you didn't know, Marcel is the lone senior on the team.
As I mentioned before, the Beavers are being led on the glass by Roeland Schaftenaar, Seth Tarver, and Marcel Jones, who each have either 18 or 19 boards. They are the only two Beavers with double-digit boards, and each average around six per game.
The Beavers and Bengals have only met twice in the past, with the series split 1-1. However, the Beavers have won four straight home openers, and are 55 of their last 68, dating back to 1939.
Although Head Coach Jay John has used a different starting line-up in each of the Beavers' three games this season, here are the probables:
The game will be televised on FSN at 7:00 tonight.
