Beavers Beat USC Upstate, Take Seventh

Even though the Beavers got seventh place in the "Top of the World" tournament, today's win must make them feel like they're "On top of the World."

Cheap jokes aside, the Beavers really did have a strong performance today. South Carolina Upstate, playing their first season as Division 1, lost to both Akron and IUPUI in the first two games of the tournament. Oregon State lost to Colorado State and Alaska.

Marcel Jones led the Beavers with 23 points on 10-11 shooting as the Beavers cruised past the Spartans of USC Upstate 65-46 thanks to a second half rally. The score was tied 30-30 at halftime, but the Beavers outscored the Spartans 35-16 in the second half. With the win, the Beavers are now 1-2 on the season.

Something must have happened in the locker room, as the Beavers nearly shot 20% better in the second half. In the first half, they were 11 of 24, or roughly 46%. In the second half, they were 14 of 21, or 67%.

Marcel Jones missed his first shot of the day, but was perfect from there on out. He played 33 minutes, was 3-for-3 from three point range, and got five boards.

While we're talking about three's, the Beavers shot 50%, the best they've done from behind the arc in a long time. They were 6-for-6. The 82% free throw percentage was also a nice improvement.

With the win, the Beavers claimed seventh place in the eight team tournament. There were many low spots over the course of three games for the Beavers, but at least they have something good to think about on the way home.

The Beavers now have three in a row at Gill-- all of which will be televised. We'll get a good look at these guys (minus CJ) and what this upcoming Pac-10 season will bring.
