Oregon State shortstop Darwin Barney has been named to the USA Baseball National Team, one of 22 college players.
The team consists of the top collegiate baseball players in the country, and it performs each summer in a schedule of exhibition games across America and overseas, versus the world's top baseball talent.
This is the second straight summer that Oregon State has been represented on Team USA, as pitchers Kevin Gunderson and Jonah Nickerson were on the 2005 squad.
Darwin will be in good company. Players who have worn the red, white, and blue for Team USA and have gone on to Major League Baseball success include such notables as Mark Prior, Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek, Todd Helton, Troy Glaus, Tino Martinez, Jason Jennings, Bobby Crosby, and Huston Street. Since the 2000 MLB amateur draft, 28 National Team members have been selected in the first round.
This summer's schedule for team USA includes a variety of domestic and international opponents, including Taiwan, Germany, Korea and Japan and it concludes with a trip to a tournament in Havana, Cuba.
