Recognition and good news on the baseball front.
"CHICAGO -- Rookie second baseman Darwin Barney will start Friday for the Cubs in the season opener against the Pirates." Darwin went 2 for 4, scored a run, was caught stealing once, and on the fielding side helped turn a double play in the Cubs 6 to 3 loss to the Pirates.
A nice piece about Stefen Romero.
Hope this tides you over ArbyOSU! Looks like this piece does all the work needed to see the current state of Beavs drafted.
Barney was named along with 28 "all-time greats" to the official College World Series Legends Team. Barney was named as a utility player and was named along such players as Barry Bonds, Dave Winfield, Robin Ventura, and Will Clark. Congrats Darwin! A good Kerry Eggers piece on the OSU baseball season. I agree with much of his assessment. One thing that really stood out for me was the level of pessimism Casey had within some of his comments, and how he tried hard to look at the bright side but really there wasn't much there beyond "Our guys are trying very hard to win" generalization. From my reading of it I agree with Eggers here: "It doesn’t look like that will happen this season. For now, the mojo is gone." I think in an objective thought process there is a chance to bounce back with 3 out of the 4 remaining series at home and playing three teams that actually the Beavs should match up well with, but I just see no indication of any type of bounce in this team right now. And if indeed it is a done deal this season it is going to be interesting to see how this set of players bounce back next year. Will they learn anything? Will it create a more humble winning environment with what obviously seems like a bunch of young and talented but yet too ahead of themselves players?
From osubeavers.com: April 29, 2010 CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State baseball head coach Pat Casey will remain in Corvallis for the Beavers' game at California Friday to attend to a family medical matter, he announced Thursday. Associate head coach Marty Lees will serve as the head coach for Friday's contest with the Golden Bears. Casey is expected to be back as head coach for Saturday's game.
Vote before Friday, April 16th by noon! Pat Casey is nominated under the coach section and Darwin Barney is nominated under the shortstop section. The voting is a bit funky in that you have to vote for more than one in each section, but still some big names all involved and a great honor to get two OSU people nominated.
