Mike Hass
Hass Makes the Bears, Others not as Fortunate
The Chicago Bears, in order to reach the 53 man NFL roster limit, cut 18 players yesterday. And Mike Hass wasn't one of them.
Mike had a great training camp capped of with a great pre-season finale Thursday that included a 9-yard leaping touchdown catch.
"It was just a case of a guy coming in behind the eight-ball a little bit and working his way onto the roster," Chicago coach Lovie Smith said. "Mike made plays every day [during training camp] and he finished up with a good last preseason game. That's the beauty about training camp. There are a couple of guys that come in and earn a spot, and Mike was able to do that."
However, others weren't as fortunate:
However, after Matt Moore was cut by the Cowboys, he was picked up by the Carolina Panthers and placed on their 53-man roster.

Mike Hass :: Chicago Bears Player of the Week
From Fox Sports:
He spent last season on the practice squad when the Bears snapped him up after the Saints drafted him in the fifth round but then waived him, hoping to sneak him back onto their practice squad.
After eight days of practices, no one can recall Hass dropping a pass. Not in 11-on-11 team segments, seven-on-seven work or individual receiving drills. Still, with starters Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian ahead of him plus Mark Bradley, Devin Hester and Rashied Davis, Hass is competing with Drisan James, David Ball, Brandon Rideau and Timon Marshall for, at the most, one spot. He's the early leader based on his flawless hands and good size (6-foot-1, 206 pounds).
"I'm pleased, but I still have a ways to go learning some hot (reads) and protections and those types of thing," he said. "I just have to keep making plays. If I make enough plays, I'll open enough eyes and good things will happen for me."
Hass was in a similar situation when he enrolled at Oregon State as a walk-on, and that worked out pretty well for him. The Portland, Ore., native won the 2005 Fred Biletnikoff Award as the top receiver in the nation after catching 90 passes for 1,532 yards. He set school career records with 220 catches and 3,924 yards and became one of just 10 players NCAA history with more than 1,000 receiving yards in three seasons.
But Hass doesn't have the flat-out speed of a Berrian or the freaky change-of-direction skills of a Hester. He does have a knack for never letting the ball hit the ground when it's thrown in his vicinity.

Hass Cut From Saints
Thats really all the news I can find on him right now. As soon as more info comes out, I'll post it here.
Hate to see this happen.

Update [2006-9-4 15:0:2 by Jake]: Mike signs with Chicago, and will probably be put on the practice squad. Let's hope he can work his way up the ladder from there, just like Rudy.

Mike! Mike! Mike! Mike!

Mike Hass Doesn't See Much Playing Time in MNF Game
...and it could be good, or bad.
At first I thought that New Orleans was just playing their starters and some bubble players, and giving all the other guys some rest. But after I browsed around at the Pure Orange message board, I found that there were some rumors that Hass may be in trade talks. Why that would make him not get as much playing time, I don't know.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Round-up: Beavs in the Pro's
I just posted about Week 1 of the pre-season on the main page, but for the sake of it getting in the "Mike Hass" categoty, here is the tidbit on him:
I know, it's not much, but he's making progress.

Mike Hass back in Action
The Saints are currently playing the Titans in a pre-season game. It's not being televised, but you can either check up every now and then at the NFL Game Center, or if you have the NFL Channel, they are showing live clips of several on going games.
With about 9:30 left in the game, Tennessee is up by 4. Mike Hass has 3 receptions for 28 yards, the longest at 13.

New Orleans Traning Camp Begins, Hass gets a Mention
The Saints opened their 2006 Training Camp at Jackson, Mississippi's Millsaps College on Friday afternoon. Most eyes were on starting quarterback Drew Brees with his return to full action after recovering from shoulder surgery.
Another eye-turning story was the fact that Reggie Bush was not at camp. Read up for yourself at that link.
Our very own Mike Hass got a mention in the recap:
Sounds like he's adapting well.
More out of Saints camp tomorrow.

Hass signs with the Saints
There hasn't been much talk around BTD lately in the Mike Hass section, but it's never to late to add to the stack of posts about him.
This time, the news is official. He's a Saint.
Hass signed a 3-year deal, with a modest $91,500 signing bonus and a rookie salary of around $275,000 (non-guaranteed, of course) for 2006. Which, Paul Buker points out, didn't send Hass to the car dealership in search of a tricked-out Escalade.
Hass made his way from New Orleans to Jackson, Mississippi Wednesday for the start of training camp.
The Saints had to wave to wide receivers Wednesday, Levon Thomas from Georgia Tech and Nathan Poole from Marshal. But 10 Wide Receivers remain on the roster, as well as former Oregon State tight end Tim Euhus.
Day 1 of Saints training camp is getting underway as we speak. We'll keep you posted.

Mike Hass in Oregonian
There was a great article in the Sunday Oregonian on Mike Hass that I keep forgetting to post to this site. Here it is:
Sunday, May 21, 2006
JIM BESEDA
The Oregonian
METAIRIE, La. -- Curtis Johnson, the New Orleans Saints' wide receivers coach, stopped the drill.
One of the free agent receivers in the Saints' rookie camp had just made a decent play on a short out pattern, turning his hips in the direction of the quarterback and catching the perfectly thrown pass while scissors-stepping toward the left sideline.
Johnson's point: That isn't the way he wants the Saints receivers to run an out pattern. Rather than face the quarterback, the receiver is supposed to be at full speed when the ball arrives, increasing the chance of being able to turn up field after making the catch.
"Like this," said Johnson, running toward the sideline with his arms pumping, knees high, hips squared and perpendicular to the line of scrimmage. "Not like this, like you were in 'Chorus Line.' "
Mike Hass was up next.
The Saints' sixth-round draft pick from Oregon State sprinted 12 yards, curled in, caught a pass that was a little high, cradled the ball and turned up field and ran.
"Hey, Hass!" Johnson hollered. "That's what I'm talkin' about, right there! I like that!"
The play was hardly spectacular. But it was emblematic of how Hass will make it in the NFL, if he makes it at all. He will run a route the way it's supposed to be run and catch anything he can get his hands on.
"I really like Mike," said Johnson, who acknowledged that Hass was "a little bit faster than I thought he would be."
"Mike catches the ball. That's the No. 1 thing. I mean, we were one of the teams that dropped the most balls in the NFL last year, so Mike is a guy that can definitely help us."
Hass is coming to a franchise that is trying to get a fresh start on many levels. It's an almost ideal situation for a player who is accustomed to disproving doubters.
"The jobs are open," Johnson said. "It wasn't as if we won the Super Bowl. . . Mike is a player that we definitely want to be on the team."
It's one advantage of at least being a draft choice, even a late one. Teams root for draft choices, even late ones, to make the roster. Every draft choice cut represents a defeat in the scouting process, and teams don't like admitting defeats.
Still, Hass understood the need to perform from the start.
"They've drafted you and they have an idea what you can do, but they haven't seen you play in person, so you want to put your best foot forward the first time they see you," Hass said. "Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL."
[snip]
I'm glad to see Mike follow through. We've had so many great athletes come through Oregon State, but we've never heard that much about them after they leave Corvallis.
Check out the link at the beginning of the post to read the rest of the article. I strongly reccomend it, it's a great article.
A hat tip the Jim Beseda at the Oregonian as well. Keep up the good work, Mike.
Go Beavers!
