Terriers Too Scrappy For Beavers

Jared Cunningham scored 21 points for the Beavers.

Jared Cunningham scored 21 points for the Beavers.

Final Score: Boston U. 96 Oregon St. 78

Despite a career-high 21 points from Jared Cunningham (1, l.), the Boston University Terrires out-scrapped the Oregon St. Beavers 96-78 in the first round of the College Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

Most of the damage came late in the first half, when the Terriers outscored the CBI defending champion Beavers with a 23-4 run, and taking a 46-27 halftime lead. Oregon St. had opened the game fast, jumping to a 5-0 lead, but Boston U., from the American East Conference, responded quickly, racing to a pair of four point leads themselves.

Oregon St. battled back, and it looked like it might be a back and forth game, until the Terries went on a tear to open a 20 point lead just before halftime.

Trailing just 19-17 with 11:22 left in the first half, the Beavers watched the Terriers blow the game open, taking a 21 point lead in less than eight minutes.

Oregon State vs. Boston U. // 7:00, Gill Coliseum // No TV

The Beavers hope to begin a long run through the CBI tonight, but they'll have to get past a hot-shooting Boston U. team first.

Talk about it here.

Derek Anderson Headed To Arizona

Former Cleveland Brown and Oregon St. Beavers QB Derek Anderson has signed a two year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, according to KTAR in Arizona.

With the retirement of the Cardinals' staring quarterback Kurt Warner, Anderson is expected to initially backup Matt Lineart, but could compete for the starting job should Lineart struggle, as has happened in the past, including when Arizona opted to bring in Warner.

Anderson spent the last four seasons in Cleveland, once making the NFL Pro Bowl.

Anderson's deal is reportedly with $3.25 million guaranteed, and potentially $7.25 million.

Former Beaver Great Passes Away

Former Oregon St. offensive lineman and assistant coach Rich Koeper passed away las Saturday from complications and effects of a heart attack. Koeper was a native of Redwood City, California, but lived in Corvallis once his professional football career ended. Koeper was 66.

Richkoeper_medium

Koeper, shown above with the old north side of then Parker Stadium in the background, starred during one of the great eras in Oregon St. football, from 1962-1965. Koeper, after a highly successful stint for Sequoia High, undefeated in 1959 & 1960, blocked for Terry Baker during Baker's Heisman trophy run in 1962, and played in the 1962 Liberty Bowl, the 1964 Hula Bowl, and was also a member of Oregon State's last Rose Bowl team, in 1965.

Koeper was selected first team All-Coast as a sophomore, All-Pac-8 pick as a senior, and was named a Second-Team All-American by the Associated Press his senior year.

Koeper also pitched for Oregon St.

Koeper went on to play professionally with the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL, and with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Koeper returned to Corvallis to served as a full-time assistant coach for coach Dee Andros and the Beavers from 1973-75, and later worked for Hewlett-Packard.

Koeper was inducted into the Oregon State Hall of Fame in 1991.

A service is scheduled for April 10 at Northwest Hills Community Church, 3300 NW Walnut Blvd., Corvallis.

RIP Rich, and sincere condolences and best wishes to your family.

It's easy to sit here and say that playing in a lower-tier tournament like the CBI is beneficial for teams who get an opportunity to practice longer than 200+ other teams in the country. And this year, the post-season fates of teams that participated in last season's CBI don't lie: Four 2009 CBI teams are playing in the NCAA tournament, and five have accepted NIT bids.

The teams headed for the NCAA tournament feature three teams that the Beavers defeated en route to their 2009 CBI Championship: UTEP, Houston, and Vermont. Richmond, who fell to UTEP in the tournament Semifinals, is also headed to the big dance.

Where Last Year's CBI Field is Headed:

NCAA (4): UTEP, Houston, Vermont, Richmond

NIT (5): Wichita State, Nevada, Northeastern, St. John's, Troy

CBI (2): Oregon State, Green Bay

CIT (1): Charleston

No postseason (4): Stanford, Boise State, Buffalo, Wyoming

UTEP is a 12-seed and will play Butler on Thursday, and qualified for the tournament after winning the Conference USA regular season title and finishing second place in the conference tournament. Houston defeated UTEP in the Conference USA title game, and finishes the season with a 19-15 record. They're in the tournament for the first time in eighteen years. Vermont won the America East conference and gets a first-round date with Syracuse. Vermont defeated Boston U to clinch the automatic bid, the team Oregon State will play first in the CBI. Richmond qualified as an at-large out of the Atlantic-10 conference, and carries a 26-8 record into the tournament.

Overall, nine teams from last years CBI made upward progress in the post-season spectrum, while two teams (OSU included) stayed constant, and four teams failed to qualify or accept a tournament bid.
