Today, Oregon St. President Ed Ray was talking just before he took his turn at serving pulled pork sandwiches for lunch at University Day about how all of Beaver Nation could be proud that the "Campaign for OSU" had, after 6 years, raised 1 billion dollars. That's an average of just over $166 million a year.
I recall that some railed at Oregon's $68 million new football complex, paid for by donated money that wouldn't have been available for other purposes, believing it "was excessive".
I also had in the back of my mind that the University of Washington completed a multi-year renovation of Husky Stadium with a price tag of about $250 million, which will be paid back over a number of years of increased ticket prices and donations.
Then I read where last fiscal year alone, Texas A&M cleared over $740 million in donations. It was a record for the Aggies, but it also serves as a reminder that we in the northwest are all playing a different game. A very different game.
