Isaac Seumalo is the starting center for the Beavs and has played very well starting as a true freshman. Seumalo was a highly regarded recruit coming out of high school, and has lived up to that top billing from day 1. It is a rarity for a true freshman to play at all, and Seumalo started for the entire season. He is also the son of defensive line coach Joe Seumalo, and he plays like a coach's son. The center position requires a lot of intelligence in making all the calls and Seumalo came in from the beginning like a much older player.
Seumalo is going to be a great player for the next few years and it all starts with how high his football IQ is. Going back through a large chunk of the Alamo Bowl (obviously not the closing moments), Seumalo always gets his assignments and generally finishes his blocks. Even if he is not completely stopping his man, he still gets enough of him in order for the play to continue. In one play he helps on two players who beat both guards respectively, and actually holds both of them off with some minor help. He also plays with good technique, he keeps his pad level low and gets off the line quickly.
Seumalo's greatest value can be found in the overall growth of the line. The offensive line is valued more as a unit than as individuals, and the group has blossomed with Seumalo as the leader of the unit. As has been previously stated through this series the Beavs are a much better football team when they are winning in the trenches, in fact it is essential for Oregon State on offense. Seumalo is not the only change, Michael Philipp returned at full health and made an impact as well, but Seumalo is a key contributor. He has been recognized across multiple watch lists as one of the best linemen of the country, and he is a critical piece of the Beaver offense.
Seumalo is one of the most important Beavers on the team and one of the greatest players. Last year he was still just a freshman and was dealing with injuries, and should be primed for a great year.
