Portland (11-16, 4-2 in the WCC) at #6 Oregon St. (22-4, 5-1) / 5:35 PM / Goss Stadium / KEJO 1240 AM & KPOJ 620 AM
Oregon St. attempts to shake out of their recent slump (relatively speaking), in which they have lost 3 of their last 5 games, against instate rival Portland of the West Coast Conference. The Beavers and Pilots were first scheduled to meet back on March 5, in Portland, but that game was rained out, and the makeup date is still pending. The teams are scheduled for a 3 game season series of mid-week games, with the third game on May 8th. at Volcanoes' Stadium in Keizer, just north of Salem.
The Pilots come in on an uptick, having swept 3 games from Santa Clara last week, elevating them into a tie with San Diego for second place in the WCC, 1/2 game behind Pepperdine.
Portland also has a "Pac-12" win, having beaten Washington 4-2, and have been competitive in a pair of losses against Oregon, games the Ducks won 3-1, and 5-1 last Tuesday.
The Beavers only win in San Diego came on the arms of Matt Boyd and usual starter Andrew Moore, who threw 4 innings in relief of Boyd. In the other 2 games, Oregon St. gave up 20 runs, in part due to committing 7 errors in those contests.
The bullpen and defense that characterized Oregon St.'s fast start to the season will need to use today to rediscover themselves, before the Beavers return to southern California, for a weekend series at UCLA. Starting pitching for both teams will be a pregame warmups decision.
Oregon St. head coach Pat Casey has decided to go with junior RHP Dan Child (3-1, 3.09). Child's last outing was the first game in San Diego, when he worked 3 1/3 + innings. Child only gave up 1 hit, but it was a home run, and he walked 4 runners, and hit a batter, as well as committing one of the 5 fielding errors the Beavers committed. As a result, 4 runs, 3 unearned, scored, and he didn't figure in the decision in the 7-4 Torero win.
Portland has picked senior RHP Matt McCallister (1-2, 5.73), who is their usual 4th starter, to take the mound first.
Casey has also returned to Max Gordon in the leadoff spot. Here's tonight's lineup:
