Baseball Pre-Season Ranking
It's another cold, rainy day in the valley, so of course Benny (and figgi) are thinking about baseball. After all, the season does start in just 44 days, and season tickets are on sale. The first formal practice is Friday.
Baseball America has released their pre-season rankings, and Oregon St. is ranked 23rd, which is 5th. highest of the Pac-12 11 (Colorado, remember, doesn't field a baseball team). Florida is atop the rankings, and Stanford is #2.
South Carolina and Arkansas come next, with Arizona rounding out the top 5. Other ranked teams from the west include UCLA, at 14th, and Arizona St. at 17th. from the conference, and Cal-State Fullerton, who round out the top 25.
Boydsworld.com has also rated the strength of schedules of teams, and again, the Pac-12 is the toughest conference in baseball. The four toughest schedules belong to Stanford, USC, Oregon. and UCLA. In fact, 8 of the toughest 9 are faced by the Pac, with California, Washington St., Arizona St., and Washington in spots 6-9.
Oregon St. actually has the softest schedule in the conference, with the Beavers coming in at #35 overall. The other conference teams are Utah at #26 and Arizona at #29. The reason for this is the Beavers' relatively soft non-conference schedule, rated 130th of the 298 "Division I" teams. Stanford, by contrast, plays the #2 non-conference schedule to go along with the brutal Pac-12 schedule.
The SEC plays the second toughest schedules, with Florida at #5, while Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Vanderbilt occupying 5 of the 6 spots from 10-15.
Fullerton, who plays the toughest non-conference schedule, Long Beach St., UC-Santa Barbara, and UC-Davis are also in the top 30.

Might not be Stanford's schedule, but not sure I would say it is going to be a "soft" non-conference schedule
With the Beavs playing Oklahoma, UConn, and Illinois all of which were solid postseason teams.
They also play West Virginia and Kansas State, which aren’t powerhouses overall but still are not push-overs.
I can see with getting some of these teams at home and overall the California teams (UC Santa Barbara, San Diego, and San Diego State) they play early are not quite as solid as they have been in the past being all leading to not quite as difficult as other schedules but it won’t be a total easy road to conference play IMO.
But also can see how some of the non-conference games during the conference play against Portland and Arkansas-Pine Bluff could bring down the overall status of non-conference play.
Going to be an interesting season, I can’t wait!

"Relatively" soft non-conference schedule,
compared to some of the others. Stanford and UCLA have schedules that wouldn’t rate out as well if they scheduled the Seattle Mariners!
Pine-Bluff could prove to be a disappointing opponent (though as always, we will need to play the games to find out), but even with Portland on the schedule, it’s not a bad non-conference schedule, especially with the need to develop several young and inexperienced players, and get some wins on the record.

Go Beavs!
I like the preconference schedule
Famous last words probably, but like you say with a young group it could be challenging enough but not too much so.
I can’t wait!

does anyone know
when the single game tickets go on sale?
Still just season tickets
Assume single ones will be soon, but they stil pushing the season ones. My guess would be end of this week or next, but I’ve been wrong before!

USA Today/Coaches Poll Has Oregon St. at #19
Stanford is the only Pac-1x team in the Coaches’ Poll top 10, at #3. UCLA, Arizona, and California are #18, #20, and #22.
Fairly lofty, given that Coach Casey said “I don’t think speed or power are terms that should be used to describe this team.”
Sounds like we might be looking at a lot of trying to get enough sacrifices strung together to get to Boyd and Bryant to try to win 2-1 and 3-2 games.
Figgi’s nerves may never make it!

Go Beavs!
personally the ranking stuff is kind-of cool and interesting, especially when we crack the top ten but really it is all about winning and again that takes care of the rankings not the other way around
AND to be a devil’s advocate Coach Casey always seems to say something like this. That seems to be the way he runs with things. I think he likes to take that approach so he can fly a bit under the radar and also uses it to challenge his teams. Honestly I don’t think we should make too much out of it until they start playing and if they live up to his so-called “expectations.”

Ryan Dunn and Keyes can carry us :P
I miss baseball.
