MLB Signing Deadline Open Thread

In what has become an annual tradition for the Oregon State coaching staff, the MLB signing deadline is today-- which means a waiting game to see if current players and recruits decide to make the jump to the majors. The deadline is 9:00 PM Pacific tonight.

For the sake of simplicity in this thread, we will only be keeping track of players that could return/go to Oregon State this season.

Of those 11 drafted players that could return or start their careers at OSU next spring, four of them have signed. Those are Sam Gaviglio, Brian Stamps, Carter Bell, and Brandon Martin.

Sam Gaviglio is currently playing with the Batavia Muckdogs in the St. Louis farm system. He has yet to appear in a game for the Muckdogs. Brian Stamps is playing in Kissimmee, Florida in the Atlanta system. He's batting .192 with 6 RBI's in 34 games.

Carter Bell is in the Northwest League playing for the Yakima Bears, a Class A Short-Season affiliate of the Diamondbacks. He's hitting .259 with 10 RBI's in 29 games for the Bears. And last but not least is Brandon Martin, who is playing for the GCL Rays in Port Charlotte, Florida. Martin is hitting .250 with 3 RBI's in 15 games.

Below is the complete list of our eligible to return/sign draftees. We will keep the list updated throughout the day with who has signed.

As of 6:53 PM

Baseball America still has all of the unsigned players on Connor’s list above as “unsigned.” Oddly, I’d feel better if even one of them was listed as signed; this likely means the database is just out of date.

It's getting pretty late

I can’t remember if all of our guys signed right at the deadline last year, but I feel like it was during the early evening. That’s why I am cautiously optimistic right now.

An Hour Later

No change on Baseball America’s database, all the guys still listed as unsigned.

Nothing on the Giants’ website or Susac’s Facebook about it.

Although Susac’s Facebook says he is a stripper at Jiggles in his free time. He’d better not give up his day job just to sign with the Giants.

That last part

is a disturbing thought.

Commit Kylin Turnbill

who isn’t even on the list, because he hasn’t even signed a LOI, signed a deal with the Washington Nationals for $325K, $100K over slot, according to Baseball America’s Jim Callis.

9 o'clock has come and gone

and I still hear nothing.

Unless word is late coming, I’m really surprised the Giants signed neither Susac nor Osich.

If they return, that could influence Coach Casey’s thinking about near-term career planning.

$1.1 Million signing bonus

on top of scale. That should tide him over for a while.

Josh Osich signed as well

From Jim Callis’ twitter – #Giants sign 6th-rder Josh Osich for $450k. #mlbdraft

$450 K bonus

Probably about as much as he could expect from the 6th. round. It’s real dicey as to whether he would move up a lot or not at this point with another year. Throw another couple of one or fewer hitters, and yeah. Get a sore arm, and he could lose it all.

Everyone else is returning/going to OSU this Fall

Overall, not a horrible deadline day. We do lose our two main guys in Susac and Osich, but I’m excited to see what Starr and Fry bring to the table next season.

Jace Fry turned down a $300K bonus

offer from the A’s. That’s I think a risk worth taking; he could improve that by an order of magnitude in a couple of years with a good stint with the Beavers.

I Wonder

Will both Susac and Osich be playing for the Volcanoes this time next week?
