BTD has learned from multiple sources that Portland State and Oregon State will be renewing their in-state men's basketball rivalry this season. The date and location are still to be determined.
Tthe last time the Vikings and Beavers met was December 17th, 2002, where Oregon State prevailed 53-50 at Gill Coliseum. Philip Ricci led all scorers in that game with 23 points.
Portland State went 14-16 last season. The Vikings do return Charles Odum, who averaged 14 ppg last season, as well as Chehales Tapscott, who averaged 8.1 rebounds per game in the 2010-2011 campaign.
Overall, I think this is another great addition to our schedule. It is obvious that Coach Robinson and his staff have their sights on an NIT or NCAA bid this season, and they want to make sure that their RPI won't be as low as in season's past.
The Beavers still need to fill the non-conference schedule with five more opponents, which is where they might go the usual route of scheduling teams like Howard and Texas-Pan American. That will be okay by me, because our schedule is plenty tough already.
2011-2012 Non-Conference Schedule (What We Know)November 13-17: Nebraska-Omaha, Hofstra in Corvallis
November 19-21: Texas, Vanderbilt or NC State in East Rutherford
December 1st: Montana in Corvallis
Unknown Date and Location: Portland State
