Sunday Elite 8 Open Thread - Where We Learn The Last Half Of The Final 4

The East and Southwest Regionals of the NCAA Tournament finish today, and the winners round out the Final 4 for next weekend in Houston. CBS has the games, starting at 11:20 this morning PDT with the Southwest Regional from San Antonio.

Kansas (35-2), the only number one seed left in the tournament, faces Virginia Commonwealth (26-11), the only real "Cinderella" in today's games. The Rams might not really be that big of an underdog, considering they not only have 4 tournament wins, they are all against higher seeded teams from 4 different "BCS/Power" conferences. The Jayhawks have won all three of their tournament games by double digit margins, however.

The last of the "Elite 8" games, the East Regional final, tips at 2:05 west coast time, in Newark.

North Carolina (29-7) takes on Kentucky (28-8) in a match up of two of the storied, brand name programs in the sport in Newark in the East Regional. The Tar Heels and Wildcats have combined for 12 National Championships and 31 trips to the Final Four. Which one will add to that stat this season?

Too early?

Is it too early to start the Bruce Pearl for Oregon State thread?

It never occurred to me until now

that there would be a time when that thread would even come up.

VCU eliminates Kansas 71-61

The Jayhawks were the last #1 seed left, but trailed most of the game, and most of it by double digits.

The Rams have now won 5 tournament games, 4 by double digits, all against “BCS/Power” Conference foes (from 5 different conferences) who were higher seeds.

VCU will play Butler in the semi-finals, which guarantees one of the Cinderellas won’t get to the title game, but it also guarantees a Mid-Major underdog will play for the National Championship for the second year in a row.

Jamie Skeen had a huge game for VCU

scoring 26 points, including making 10 of 12 free throws, and also pulling down 10 rebounds.

The Rams overcame being out-rebounded 46-36 by out-shooting Kansas. The Jayhawks shot only 35.5%, and made only 2 of 21 3 pointers, 9.5%

VCU shot almost 40%, and an even better 48% (12 of 25) on three pointers.

Kentucky defeats North Carolina 76-69

delivering the third upset of the four Elite 8 games. If you can count UConn’s improbable run as a non-upset.

As it was in the first game, 3 point shooting was the difference, with the Wildcats hitting 12 of 22, 54.5%, including one by DeAndre Liggins with 35 seconds left, to just 3 of 16 by the Tar Heels. Taking too many three pointers can lose you a game, but making almost none almost always will lose the game in this day and age.

Brandon Knight made 5 of 11 three pointers and had a game high 22 points for Kentucky, more on all accounts than anyone. Tyler Zeller had 21 points for North Carolina, and Harrison Barnes 18, but Barnes missed 7 three pointers, and the Tar Heels didn’t provide their big two with much support.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats got double figures from all five of their starters.

John Calapari’s personnel management and job hopping may be controversial, but he is proven again as a good in game coach.

Calipari is undoubtedly dirty but I agree, you can’t deny his ability to coach.
