Oregon St.'s Colby Covington won his first two matches in Philadelphia in the NCAA Wresting National Championship matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. Covington opened with a major decision over Mike Dessino of Bloomington, by an 18-6 score, and then picked up an 8-2 decision over Jacob Swartz of Boise St.
The wins led the Beavers to 14.5 points after the first day, which put them in 14th. place.
Five other Oregon St. wrestlers are still alive, but are in consolation or wrestle-back action, each having picked up a loss amidst one or more wins, including Mike Mangrum at 141 lbs., Scott Sakaguichi at 149 lbs., Bryce Arand at 184 lbs., Chad Hanke at 197 lbs., and Heavyweight Clayton Jack.
Jason Lara (125 lbs.) and Garrett Drucker (133 lbs.) also made it to Nationals, but lost both of their first two matches, eliminating them from the tournament.
