Oregon St. Places Second In Pac-10 Wrestling

Oregon St. placed second behind Boise St. Sunday night at Gill Coliseum in the Pac-10 Wrestling Championships. Colby Covington repeated as conference champion at 174 pounds, and heavyweight Clayton Jack also claimed an individual championship for the Beavers. Boise St. claimed the Pac-10 Championships with 147 points, while Oregon St. wound up in second with 137.5. Arizona St. took third with 117 points, followed by Stanford (114), Cal State Bakersfield (97), Cal Poly (96.5) and Cal State Fullerton (61.5). Oregon St. will send at least six wrestlers to the NCAA tournament, which will be held March 17-19 in Philadelphia. In addition to Covington and Jack, Jason Lara (125), Garrett Drucker (133), Scott Sakaguchi (149) and Chad Hanke (197) also advanced. Mike Mangrum (141) and Brice Arand (184) may also make the national championships. Both are likely to receive at-large entrants when the full brackets are determined by a selection committee on March 9. Mangrum finished third in the Pac-10 meet and has been highly ranked much of the season; Arand finished second. Oregon St. accomplished this without head coach Nate Zalesky, who had to miss the meet, attending to a family member with a serious illness in Iowa. Andy_Wooldridge@yahoo.com
