BSU's Winston Venable suspended by WAC for hit on James Rodgers
From the release: "Venable should have been ejected for the third-quarter hit because it was a flagrant personal foul, Benson said. The officials didn’t throw a flag, but Benson said they might not have been looking at the hit because it was not on the ball carrier."
Hope James is feeling better and that Venable learns a lesson here.

I've never taken a Football Officiating class
But shouldn’t it be at least one of the officials jobs to be looking at something other than the ball?
Go Beavers!
There was, and this was discussed with an official on the Joe Beaver show
Recall Katz was scrambling thru the play, near the sideline, and near a first down, and the official nearest the play was in a position to have to scramble himself, and still watch for sideline, line of scrimmage, and first down progress, higher priorities.
The other official on the side had responsibility for receivers, as Katz could also still have thrown the ball, and wasn’t looking primarily in that direction. He was looking at something other than the ball.
I was watching, and shooting, right down the sideline, and I didn’t see the hit in real time for what it was.
I had to see a replay before I could see the issue.
I can understand and accept that it could have been missed.

So, it gets handed down that he should serve a one-game suspension, but Boise St. can appeal to the WAC and get it reduced to half?
I think the issue is
whether the appeal should have been granted (judgement call).
At least the issue wasn’t just completely brushed under the rug.

Major loss of respect for Coach Petersen
for appealing this decision. Way to send the message that these kinds of hits aren’t acceptable. It’s no wonder they keep happening.
Why?
Pete disagreed that the hit was flagrant…just like many other fans and pundits. This whole deal really was in the eye of the beholder. You lost respect for Petersen because he disagreed that the hit was flagrant? I do too…but Venable’s suspended either way.
Just wondering how you felt about LaMichael James serving a meaningless one-game suspension for choking out his girlfriend. Which incident showed more “intent to harm”?

James getting caught up in that kind of thing was pretty despicable in itself, but to his credit, he was actually found not guilty from what I remember. This comparison reminds me of something though... hmm... what is the old saying again?

I didn't feel great about LMJ.
Let’s not get carried away and make it sound like he tried to kill her or something, though. From what I heard in the media (and it was allll over the media around here) the situation that night between LMJ and his girlfriend was more complicated than “he tried to choke her out”. That said, getting physical like that isn’t cool, and I don’t excuse him.
Back to your “Why?”: Whether Coach Petersen thought the hit was flagrant or not, the WAC made its decision that it was, in fact, flagrant. The WAC is presumably not looking to stick it to BSU, and they are more impartial than Venable’s coach. A one-game suspension against NMSU is a small price to pay to keep the message firm that those hits aren’t tolerated. Some of us question if he has been doing enough to send that message. I do kind of see what you’re saying, but Petersen needs to put his money where his mouth is more on these hits, and this appeal was a step in the wrong direction.
Nothing about LMJ's actions that night were intended to harm anyone.
He was using the minimum amount of force necessary to defend his home and property against a violent, enraged woman who was committing a number of crimes against him. He shouldn’t have been charged with anything and shouldn’t have been suspended.
If you want to call out Ducks for intentional criminal behavior, I suggest you review Rob Beard’s case. He pled to the exact same crime as LMJ and served the same suspension, but he actually did intend to hurt an innocent woman. His suspension should have been longer.
There’s also something to be said for respecting the higher authority. The appeal effectively says, “NCAA experts and our conference officials are stupid for deciding that, and I know better.” I’m surprised the WAC didn’t stand their ground.
Agreed . .
Why announce a penalty if you don’t enforce it.
Side note: This year the WAC is somewhat anti-BSU since they’ve defected. They would not take it easy on them.
That said, getting physical like that and being a duck isn’t cool, and I don’t excuse him.
I agree with this.
In all seriousness though, I think the main reason for his suspension was for simply getting himself into this situation. It was Chip Kelly’s way of saying, “Dude, you REALLY need to shape up and be smarter about what you do and who you do it with/to/around/etc.”
Rule of thumb
If a girl freaks out and tries to steal stuff/shove you/whatever, call the cops and call it a day. It’s always going to look worse to people if it’s guy on girl than if it’s girl on guy when something happens, no matter the circumstances, fair or not.
Probably a fair suspension . . .
Something should be done about the hit. 1/2 game or 5 game, it doesn’t change the outcome of the game. He clearly wasn’t looking for James, he was running full speed at Katz. It’s clear if watched in real time. His eyes are on Katz until a fraction of a second before hitting James.
Petersen and Riley are two of the classiest coaches in CFB. That’s why Riley didn’t ask for a review.
After all this, I can hardly wait for ASU
and Vontaze Burfict, nicknamed “The walking personal foul”
Dennis’ teams have always played until they hear the echo of the whistle, and some of us were there for the bench clearing incident the last time the Sun Devils were here.
My prediction: NO ONE will think they mistakenly wandered onto a tennis match on Saturday.

Not a problem
Burfict has a weakness: Just play with a quick tempo, and he spontaneously gets phantom injuries! Oh noes! :-O
cyring?
Sounds like a lot of you beaver fans should maybe petition your university to exit playing Div 1A football, maybe some flag football would be more up your alley.
This is football, James tried to make a block against a guy twice as big as he was, Venable wasn’t purposely trying to injur him, Venable was trying to tackle Katz. Wow unreal.
Yep
That’s pretty much my reaction to the BSU line now. How anyone can call that a serious block when Rodgers was pushed into Venable’s path from behind by another BSU player is beyond me. All the defense of helmet-to-helmet hits (that’s part of football, you nancies!), punching (he wasn’t taking a serious swing!), and the like is making me think I’m in the Twilight Zone.
Not to beat a dead horse, but...
I liked this observation from the GT’s Brooks Hatch and thought I’d share:
On Wednesday, the Western Athletic Conference originally suspended Boise State’s Winston Venable for an entire game for his cheap-shot, helmet-first, concussion-causing hit on Oregon State’s James Rodgers in BSU’s 37-24 win this past Saturday, even though he was not penalized by the WAC officiating crew.
Several minutes later, Venable was penalized for an attempted spear of OSU quarterback Ryan Katz. Venable again led with his head, but fortunately he missed Katz, who was sliding to the turf, as quarterbacks are encouraged to do, to avoid contact.
Yet somehow Venable’s suspension was reduced to one-half of a game after Boise State appealed the ruling.
Maybe Venable should have speared someone a third time. That way he’d only have been suspended for a quarter.

Should’ve included this, probably.
