When Utah and Colorado join the Pac-12 next year, it will still be the Pac-10 for baseball. Colorado, of course, does not field a baseball team, but the conference will not grow with the addition of Utah. The reason? Cal today has announced the elimination of men's and women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, and baseball, in addition to reducing mens rugby to club status, effective the end of the current academic year. The cuts are a $4 million cost cutting move, eliminating most notably baseball before the infusion of capital from impending new media contracts arrives. In all 163 of 814 student-athletes at Berkley are directly impacted. It's not about competitiveness either, as, while the Bears baseball team has more tradition that recent success, Cal was the 2008 NCAA Rugby Champions.
