Where I Come From: All-Time Favorite Moments

Here comes the fifth post of a week-long series of posts sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011. I got a day behind, so we have two discussion topics for this afternoon and the weekend. Make sure you visit my earlier post and share your all-time Oregon State players.

What are your favorite Oregon State football moments?

I can think of many, but for the purposes of this post, I'll include the first three moments that came to my mind when I sat down to brainstorm.

Star-divide

2007 Civil War, "Blocked Field Goal"

This game seems like a blur now, but I remember it most for the moment that decided the game: Matt Evensen's field goal that was blocked by the Beaver defense.

Here's a nice highlight package from the game:

2008 USC Game

I don't know about you, but this game felt more like a dream than anything else. Seeing Jacquizz Rodgers slice the USC defense over and over again just seemed too good to be true! The game was a great coming-out party for Jacquizz on national television, and jump-started the late run OSU made in the 2008 season.

2007 Civil War, "Double Overtime"

My dad and I went to this game at Autzen, and sat in my grandpa's season tickets (who, you may remember, is a Duck). His seats are in the fourth or fifth row on about the 20-yard line right behind the visitors bench, so we found ourselves surrounded by a sea of drunk Oregon fans who were eager to taunt the Beaver players standing on the sidelines.

The back and forth nature of this game was absolutely incredibly. The momentum swayed back and fourth so many times that I should have taken Dramamine before I left home. The Beavers took the lead for good when James Rodgers scored on a fly sweep in double overtime, but there was the botched field goal drama for the Ducks before that, and I could go on and on. It was the first time that the visiting team had won a Civil War in ten years. I still remember running out onto the Autzen turf after the game... I had a walking boot on my right foot due to an injury I suffered in football, but I didn't care.

What are your favorite moments?

So many to remember...

Was the double-OT Civil War the one when Yve was out, and Matt Sieverson busted the long TD run on our first play from scrimmage? I remember thinking, “Who do we have at tailback?” and then he ripped off that run.

Being at the 01.01.01 Fiesta Bowl was awesome. Especially after pounding the Domers into the ground 41-9. For WEEKS leading up to that game, the ND fans were talkin’ crap on Beaver boards about how we didn’t deserve to be there, how they were going to kill us, blah blah blah. All because “they’re Notre Dame, and we’re not…” Talk about your sense of entitlement! One of the best comments said that we wouldn’t travel to the game, so we didn’t deserve to go. Man, when I got to Tempe, it was a freakin’ SEA of orange! Occasionally, you’d see a convertible full of frat boys (complete with navy blue sweaters tied around their necks (no joke!)) or an elderly couple in ND gear. The rest was Beaver Nation!

Let’s see… the 2-point try in the Sun Bowl was awesome, as was the game at Hawai’i. I’m not sure I have anything that tops beating #1 USC in 2008, though. My cousin in PA (who is a Penn State alum) texted me during the first half saying, “Are you watching this? I’m glad we played the Beavers when we did!”

Fiesta '01 was a great time...

I’ll never forget Chad Johnson breaking free on that long pass, pulling out my camera only to clearly watch through my lens the ball drop before he crossed the goal-line. The ND sideline is going nuts and noone else in our section could figure out why. Then they showed the replay and the whole stadium knew.

Next thing I remember is the PA system saying, “The play on the field is being reviewed,” and looking at the jumbo tron to see the face of a referee. For a split second we were all duped and then sighed relief when the remainder of the Tostitos commercial finished.

Even though the PAT had already been kicked and despite there being no replay in CFB at the time, there was a split second I thought that touchdown was coming back.

Yes, it was

The Beavers didn’t have Yvenson when they beat USC in 2006, as well as the 2OT Civil War

My List

1. Greg Laybourn Interception, 2008 USC Game-After screaming my lungs out for three straight hours and having a pretty comfortable lead the whole game, I’m too nervous to even watch at this point. But I do manage to see Mark Sanchez let a pass sail just a little too high, and Greg Laybourn return the ball down to the one yard line. I then rush down to the bottom of my section so I will be the first one on to the field. That was my favorite game EVER.

2. 2006 USC Game-Most of the game is a blur to me, but I remember Sammie Stroughter going into absolute BEAST MODE. Rushing the field is always awesome of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ_D3wRYQoE

3. 2007 California Game-One of my first ever road games. Going from pure disbelief when DeSean made that outstanding catch, to pure celebration when Kevin Riley decided to run the ball.

Two things I’ll never forget about that game:

1. When Cal was on our 1 Yard Line right in front of the Beaver Section, our fans were jumping up and down and screaming just like we were back at Reser. I will never forget that Goal Line Stand.

2. Instead of celebrating on the field or on the sideline, all of the players ran over to the Beaver Section to celebrate with the fans. That was pretty cool.

Meant to mention that game.

We were visiting my parents in Florence, who at the time had satellite TV. Well, you know how weather can affect a dish setup… the channel kept crapping out on us, which was extremely frustrating. So my mom called the neighbors (also Beavers fans) and asked if they had cable. They said they were watching the game, and even had a spare TV in their downstairs room, if we wanted to come over to use that. So we went over and were able to watch the game, us screaming downstairs, and the neighbors occasionally whooping upstairs. (They are older.)

It was also funny because there was a troop of raccoons that kept knocking on the sliding glass door while we were watching the game. I’m guessing they just wanted a handout, but maybe they are Beavers fans too! :P

The 2006 USC game was amazing as well. One of those “man-tears” moments at a sporting event, where you’re so freaking happy and buzzed that you could possibly let one slide. A tear, that is.

#1. Civil War 1998- This meant a lot. This was a turning point. Plus, it was double OT. Classic football in the State of Oregon on a rain soaked carpet in Parker Stadium. Crazy classic.

#2. USC 2008- Watching Quizz do this (see below) all day long was amazing.

#3. Fiesta Bowl 2001- Lots of fun had at ND’s expense and lots of smiles in the Beaver State. How ’bout that 3rd quarter?

#4. Cal 2007- Goal. Line. Stand.

LOL

Watch at 2:50 in the USC game. Two USC defenders smash into each other while trying to get quizz.

Too many!

Plays:
Simonton’s 1998 Civil War winning run
2007 Cal Goal Line Stand
James Rogers’ Simonton impersonation in the 2007 Civil War OT win
Van Orsow’s 2pt conversion block against USC in 2006
Laybourn’s INT to seal the win against USC in 2008
Pick a Quizz run against USC in 08

Entire Games:
1999 Cal Victory (7th victory breaking the streak)
2001 Fiesta Bowl
2006 & 2008 USC games
Any number of Civil War victories

Simonton's game winning TD

will always be the signature play, because of both the timing, and the landmark turning point it represented.

Others that stand the test of time:

Van Orsow’s block because of the magnitude of the opponent.

Jess Lewis running down OJ Simpson in the open, because no one thought it was possible.

The stand against Cal because it was several plays in a row.

Bernard’s touchdown after pleading for the chance to win the game, because of the incredible pressure of being able to back up an emotional decision with a “what ever it takes” effort.

Go Beavs!

ALL of the above!!!

I honestly can’t think of much of anything to add, excellent work everyone!

Ok, here is one that is from a loss, but that first half last minute TD drive by the Beavs in last year’s Civil War was a ballsy deal. I was VERY close to the endzone when James scored on that Canfield pass and that was a on a string you just couldn’t believe seeing on the televised replay. Plus overall Sean just surgically took apart the defense on that drive, it was a thing of beauty and had the UO fans very very nervous going into halftime which also was a thing of beauty since many thought they were going to take it to us yet again. Alas we did lose that game, but that was one gutsy performance overall and that drive summed up for me in many ways how far this OSU program has gone under Mike Riley and the possibilities still out there to be had.

Quizz is one heck of a player

But boy it was so tough watching him own USC’s defense that night, and that was arguably ’SC’s best defense this past decade. Definitely his coming out party.

2008 USC Game

Reser was like nothing I’d ever seen or heard before, you could feel how intense it was for the entire game. With USC making an expected late charge, and OSU hanging on by the fingernails of Greg Laybourn. I will never forget that game.

2008 USC, 2007 UO, and 1999 Cal

First, I will say the 1999 Cal game that ended the streak. I was not at the game, but I remember watching it on TV with my dad and he began jumping and shouting, and even crying when the streak ended. He was attending OSU the first year of the streak and had experienced every excruciating year of it.

2008 USC – You can talk to anyone I spoke with before the game that I felt something special was going to happen. I just felt it all day. I was at work for most of the day being harassed by Duck fans about how OSU had no chance. I just told them they should watch the game. They had nothing to say the next day. I remember walking into the stadium and every emotion from the 2006 game just carried over into the game. I’ve never experienced an atmosphere like it.

2007 UO – Who can’t love a Civil War win in hostile territory? Sure UO was coming off a pair of losses that ended any hope to salvage a Pac-10 title, but the win was still sweet. We gave UO just the amount of hope they needed before thrusting the dagger into their sides. I loved rushing the field from the middle of the Duck donor section.

I had that same feeling

The minute you stepped into the stadium, you just KNEW the night was going to end well.
