Where I Come From: Your Tailgating Traditions
This is the third installment of a week-long series of posts sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011. If you missed the last discussion on our favorite OSU teams, check it out and add your thoughts.
Today's post is going to be short, as the subject is one in which I am definitely not an expert: tailgating.
Now, I'm not of the alcohol-drinking age, but even if I was, I'm not the type of person who enjoys stumbling into the stadium during the second drive of the both the first and second halves.
Whether it was back when I was still a three-sport athlete, or even during my time as a manager for my high school's teams, I'm always antsy on gameday. Oregon State games are no different. I hate sitting around, waiting for gametime to roll around.
I like to get to the stadium early and watch the team go through warm-ups... while the majority of fans do their tailgating out in the parking lots.
So I need your help on this one. What are your tailgating traditions? Any good recipes you'd like to share, that may convince me to stay in the parking lot a bit longer?
Also, I know there's been some talking about getting a BTD tailgater together so we can put faces to names. Again, this isn't my cup of tea, so if there is interest in doing something like this, let's discuss it here-- and maybe we can find someone other than myself to take the lead.

Well hey, once this thread gets going, you’ll be a pro for when you make it up here.

typical saturday:
if it’s a 12:30/1 game, wake up, eat some cereal, then it’s “pong” until nearly gametime, then walk to reser.
if it’s a later game, i follow the above until a little bit before gametime and then can be found wandering around the stadium and the tailgating areas before the game.
pretty mundane, i know
Usually arrive about 2 Hours before Kickoff
Go to University Hero for the best sandwiches EVER.
Head to our parking spot about ten minutes from the stadium. Usually eat, throw the Football, and listen to the Pregame Show.
Finally we head to the big lot outside of Reser where we chill with the people who have Season Tickets next to us.
I like to get inside Reser just before the National Anthem. Anything before that makes me extremely nervous.
I Hate Your Ducks
Unfortunately I don’t make it to every home game, but when I do make it down, I try to leave Portland fairly early to beat traffic. Once I’m parked, I go to one of two tailgaters. One is a tailgater that my family has been having for years with some close family friends. It’s over by Gill. Kind of a potluck style thing. The other is a group of guys I know. They have a slightly more hi-tech, new age party with a TV and all that. I don’t know, I’m a little more old fashioned and prefer the radio, beer, eating and talking.
At halftime I’ll sometimes run to the alumni center to two fist some beers but I am never late coming back into the stadium. That’s weak.
Tailgating is for out-of-towners. :P
I hate traffic (having grown up in small coastal towns, I’m starting to think even Corvallis is getting too big…) so we usually take advantage of the Beaver Shuttle bus service. We’ve parked at the Fairgrounds a couple times, but I think it’s quicker to pay the $10 parking near what was called Apperson Hall when I went to school (I think it’s Kearney now?) and take the free bus to the stadium. Once I get to my seat, I usually stay put for the whole game, so I won’t have to fight the crowds or wait in line.
It’s also for people who like to have fun, socialize, drink and eat before and after games. But yes, I am an out of towner, and I do enjoy it, so maybe you’re right.
What was someone saying about sarcasm the other day? ;P

Speaking of serious business, how much coin did UNike pay to BtD to make the NCAAF ad show “Where I come from, Ducks earn their wings” and display the donut logo? It shows every stinkin’ time I load the page. Sickening.
Seriously! :P
Well, as long as he applies all those Nike bucks towards his education at OSU, I’ll count it as a win!
Indeed my question was!
BUT If we are earning revenue who cares about Jake’s education, we all should be getting freakin’ kick-backs for having to look at that ad everytime we load the page.

LOVE tailgaiting
I’m from Corvallis, went to OSU and still live in Corvallis (so not an out of towner…), and for me tailgaiting is one of the best parts of game days.
It’s just like going to parties I think … it’s more or less fun depending on where it is and who else is there. We have some friends who hustle and get a great spot near Dixon, and a bunch of old grad friends gather there before games and cook up some food and drink beer. It’s simple, lo tech and way fun. Often we run back there at halftime, and if the game is a blowout we sometimes don’t make it back.
Only bad thing … thieves! Anything we don’t lock down, people come in and take. We even had a cooler chained up with a bike chain to a tree one time that got take by someone with bolt cutters. If you see anyone walking around tailgate areas with bolt cutters … punch him in the face.
I’ve actually never had a theft problem. The only thing that goes back into the cars are the coolers and anything small (BBQ utensils, lanterns, expensive camping chairs, bags, etc.) that someone could swoop up quickly.
That sucks. I’ve always wondered about that.
All the tailgaiters I go to/have gone to just drop their canopies down onto everything and kind of mush stuff up into the center in a pile.
Damn;
I really want to star tailgating before games. Anybody wana chill?? haha
Alright, so...
Good sandwiches, pregame show, take a shuttle, lock stuff down unless you’re with ArbyOSU. Anything else?

Tailgating Traditions
First off, I haven’t missed a single home game in nearly a decade. We (My dad, brother, and I) usually arrive 4 hours prior to kickoff (my brother and I leave Portland at 8:00 am for a 1:00 kickoff while my dad leaves southern Oregon at 7:30). We have been parking in the same lot behind Withycombe Hall the entire time we have had season tickets. We have a small tailgater, but we have it with a friend of my fathers and one of his two kids. We start by getting out the Beaver GameDay Radio (A solar/wind-up powered radio that we always listen to the pre/post game on as well as other games going on in the nation) and follow by getting out the Fire&Ice Grill (Grill pops up and has a big cooler underneath) and our Beaver lawn chairs. My brother and I don’t drink alcohol but my dad and his buddy and kids do, so we’ll all get out our drinks and start throwing the mini footballs that we got pre-game at the 2004 USC Fog Bowl game. Depending on the weather, we’ll throw up our canopy. We usually grill steak sandwiches a few times a year as well as brats, burgers, etc. For the rare 12:30 game we will fix breakfast (not sure how the 30 min difference changes things, but it does) and have ham/sausage, eggs, and pancakes.
We leave for the game 45 min to an hour early and it takes about 10 minutes to walk to the stadium. We say our traditional sayings as my brother, father, and I depart from my fathers buddy (we have seats on opposite sides of the stadium). We’re in the stadium typically when the counter is at 29 minutes and are usually the first in our vicinity to arrive.
After the game, win or loss, we walk back to the car and get out the grill and canopy for anther round of tailgating (only the rare late game or weekday game will we not tailgate afterward). If there is an opportunity to rush the field, we always do and are some of the first onto the field (we’re in row 10). We listen to the entire post game show as well as grill and talk about the game when my fathers buddy gets back.
We’ve had this routine for the last decade. I’m afraid this year it may change as I have moved to Arizona. I’m arranging to fly up for every game with the pair that sit directly behind us, but work my not allow me to make every game.
If you see my user name and you are anywhere near the section we sit in, you will probably recognize me and the custom hard hats my father, brother, and I have been wearing the last 5 years.
Section 19
We’ve been in Section 19 since 2000. Seen some of the greatest OSU moments from within 20 yards.
S Jackson flexing in the endzone.
S Stroughters punt return.
J Newtons catch.
The Van Orsow batted down pass.
We’ve thought numerous times about moving sections, but we just can’t do it.
Nice tradition you have there.
Hope you get up to as many home games as possible. That’s tough having to move away like that.
And welcome to BtD! Hope to see you throughout the season. And for all first time readers/posters, feel free to stick around AFTER football season as well! (I have a very good feeling about hoops this year!)
Awesome
After reading your post, I couldn’t help but notice your move to AZ. I did the same thing late last year. Attending OSU for four years and graduating was a great experience, but after getting used to Corvallis (from Portland originally), it’s been quite different.
Whereabouts in AZ you at, if you don’t mind me asking?
