Jacquizz Rodgers and the last 15 Heisman winners
I'll be honest. I didn't have much hope for Quizz getting very close to winning the Heisman, figuring it would go to one of the bigger schools, with a bigger star, even if Jacquizz had a better year than most of the top finishers. But when I read Ted Miller's best case for the Beavers, it made me think he might've had a chance. So I decided to look at the last 15 Heisman winners, and see how they relate to Jacquizz.
Position of last 15 Heisman winners:
5 RB
9 QB
1 DB/WR
What it means for Quizz:
Obviously he has a chance, and from a Heisman worthy standpoint, this years crop of running backs is pretty thin. He'll have to beat out last year's Heisman winner Mark Ingram, but other then that, it looks relatively clear for Rodgers. If he has a big year like we know he can, then it could be down to him and a couple of the numerous QB's in contention. Here's how I see the QB situation: Ryan Mallet (Arkansas) should pose a significant threat, along with Kellen Moore (Boise State), and possibly Terrelle Pryor (Ohio State). Maybe, if Jake Locker puts together a great season, he could be in the mix, and my dark horse has to be Zach Collaros (Cincinnati),
Conference:
3 Pac-10 (All USC)
4 Big 10
4 Big 12
3 SEC
1 ACC
What it means for Quizz:
Normally, I'd say this is a death blow to Rodgers' chances. But I don't think USC, as a whole, will get quite as much attention because they're ineligible for postseason play. And we all know the Beavs play TCU and Boise St., which will get Quizz more publicity for the Heisman voters. Combine all of that with the fact that the Beavers are legitimate contenders for a high-level bowl game, and have a chance for the Rose Bowl, and I think the Mid/East coast bias is almost taken care of.
Team's Conference Finish::
1st: 12
2nd: 1
3rd: 2
What it means for Quizz:
He'll need a supporting cast, because the Beavs need to win, so that he can win. More specifically, he needs his brother to keep up what he's been doing, he needs a defense that gets the ball back to him, and perhaps most importantly, he needs Ryan Katz to do well. That will make a balanced offense for the Beavers, so that opposing defenses can't stuff Quizz every time he touches the ball, and stuff his Heisman hopes in the meantime. I keep going back and forth on whether Quizz will have a better chance at the Heisman this year or next. Next year, Katz will have more experience, however the Beavers will have lost players like James Rodgers, James Dockery, and Paea, who currently play a large role in the Beavs' offense and defense.
What I expect for Quizz and the Heisman:
I think Jacquizz Rodgers will be invited to NYC, and finish in the top three.

Quizz's Heisman chances
Come down to one thing, imo. Rose Bowl. We go
there, he goes to New York. We don’t, he doesn’t.
…Not taking anything away from this post though,
ha. Very well done, all good and valid points.
James freakin' Rodgers. Beast.

I thought that too,
But I figured if we finish 2nd and win a good bowl game, he still has a chance.

You might be right.
A Rose Bowl berth and solid numbers all but punch his ticket to NYC, but I think a strong finish and a second or third place finish could easily put Quizz in the mix as well. We’ll see. There’s a lot on Quizz’s shoulders this year—from the success of the team to his own Heisman aspirations.
That was another thing that made me wonder
Whether he’d have a better shot this year or next. He’ll be more used to the pressure in his senior year.

I don’t know if we see him for a fourth year.
If he has a Heisman caliber season, or even just churns out another solid season, I could see him looking strongly at the NFL draft. It’s so strange because I always thought that he would miss out on an NFL opportunity but so many prognosticators think he’ll get picked, and high too.

Interesting, this kind-of surprises me.

How we do in a bowl
won’t matter, as the award will already have been handed out.
In fact, a lot of votes will have been cast before we play the Civil War.
Assuming the Beavs are doing well, how the USC game goes, which will potentially have a huge audience, is probably the most important thing. A game like he had two years ago in Reser would be huge, especially if that had OSU looking like they were heading for a showdown with the UofO for the Rose Bowl. And a WHOLE lot of fun!

Go Beavs!
As is always the case for a West Coast Heisman candidate, performing well in the high profile games will be KEY.
Quizz would need to blow up against TCU, BSU, U$C and UO to stay in consideration.
I’m really rooting for the kid this year. Not only because he’s a Beaver, but because he seems to have his head on straight and like a deserving student athlete.
astute
was somewhat surprised that you have taken notice of cinn’s qb collaros… not many even know he exists.. but in the four games he filled in for pike last year… his numbers were off the chart… 75% completion .. what 1200 yrds , 300 + running and what one interception and a qb rating of around 195… and looking at cinn receivers this year… at least 4 exceptional wr and one exceptional te… maybe one of the top groups if not the best… if collaros even has numbers that are 80% of last and cinn has a good year… really could be in the running.
also… some may keep in mind cinn runner with the name pead… cinn off scheme under kelly did not really utilize the ground game … but pead did have around 800 yds … but an average of 6.7 yds per carry… he also went to same high school in ohio as arche griffin (osu two time heisman) and broke all of archies running records…
By the way Figgi4life
I thought this was an excellent post. Meant to post a bit earlier my thoughts.
Interesting thoughts, and I would say that yes next year he will have more experience like you said above, as well as Katz, but I think a really important thing this year is that this will be the last year James and Quizz are together as OSU Beavers. I don’t think we can overlook the importance of the chemistry those two have as brothers and how they feed off each other as co-leaders on the team. I think there are very good chances next year, his senior year, but do think it bodes better this year with his brother around pushing him to really really excel.

I’m worried that he might look to test the NFL waters with big brother after this season. Let’s hope he has a great season that actually makes him sit down and consider it… only to return to OSU, a la Paea.
Quizz and the NFL (as well as brother James) will be interesting because of their size. They are strong as hell, but at the same time not as tall as I think some NFL teams are going to feel totally comfortable with. Plus Quizz does not have the open field speed and relies on between the tackles for much of his running, which he will then be up against some VERY fast front defensive lines and LBs at the pro level. He matches up so well with college teams, but the pros I don’t know really.
So I wonder if he might not stick around for another season to prove himself more. But yes it is a good point to consider that he might not have such a emotional connection once James is gone.
I would be interested to know about other smaller NFL backs and how they compare with Quizz size wise and also running styles.
-RVM
He’s definitely NOT the prototypical type of back by any means and does lack that top gear you’d want a small guy to have.
But if Maurice Jones-Drew (5’8"), Ray Rice (5’9"), Frank Gore (5’9"), DeAngelo Williams (5’9") and Darren Sproles (5’6") have carved their niche, I’m confident Quizz will get a hard look from someone. Not saying he is the total package that some of these guys were coming out of college, but he’s shown ability, strength, durability and vision, which I think are really important.
Here’s an interesting read on undersized NFL players.
Really interesting to see how that position has changed. In the 80s, the top running backs were 6’ or more. Warp speed to 2010, 29 years later, and only two of the leagues top runners, Adrian Peterson and MR. STEEEEE-VEN JACK-SOOOOOOOON clear 6’. Crazy but true.
Excellent, thanks!
I have been actually one of those people that has argued the whole size deal with Quizz has been overstated a bit at the college level, and also think he does have more deceptive speed than people give him credit for. But kind-of wonder about the NFL’s incredible speed on defense between the tackles and how that will have an effect on Quizz’s strengths we have seen at OSU running between the tackles.
The read you linked to is really interesting and does make you wonder about his chances of success at the pro level being much greater than I thought and think you bring up some good points. I also am thinking if he gets aligned with the right NFL offensive line, a more power run the ball up the middle type and not a more spread run to the sides type, that he could indeed have a good deal of success, but don’t pass that on to him though!
-RVM
Keep in mind that he’s a great receiver and a great blocker. He wouldn’t ever be in a situation where he’d be getting the lion’s share of the carries, but he could definitely end up being a change of pace/situational guy.
shhh
Very true.
But enough of talking up his NFL chances, I think he’s got some even better chances to get a college degree and play one of the best FOUR year football careers at OSU ever.
:-)

Bet you he's created a
“WashingtonStateGuru”, and posted it over on Coug Center too. And every other Pac-10 blog. It’s funny because if he really was a Pac-10 guru, he couldve written something about the post/Quizz, and then just mentioned it at the end. But instead, it’s just a “Great!” and then spam.
