Derek Anderson Released By Browns

With a roster bonus imminent, and Cleveland (and Mike Holmgren, formerly with the Seattle Seahawks), having just traded with the Seahawks for QB Seneca Wallace, the Browns have today released former Oregon St. quarterback Derek Anderson.

I have no idea what type of NFL career Anderson can have, but you have to think this is the best for him. That is not one good situation in Cleveland right now. Let’s just hope he stays out of Detroit though!

IMO, with Holmgren there,

it might become a better situation than it has been.

Understandable that Mike would want one of the guys he drafted and coached, and knows and trusts, in Seneca. I think Derek lost out to Brady Quinn solely on the basis of the amount of money guaranteed to Quinn whether he’s on the roster or not, vs. Derek’s money being guaranteed only if he is on the roster.

Derek recently said he was letting his agent do his job, which is to find a spot, while Derek did his job, which, in his mind, was to get physically ready to compete for a slot wherever he lands.

Yep agree with you about Holmgren being there. Still not the best atmosphere for being a young QB trying to establish oneself with all the baggage that organization has around it right now.

I really see Derek as someone who needs to find a team where there is a veteran QB on his way out and who can mentor Anderson as the replacement. I don’t know personally if Anderson has the consistent skill/mental set to be a long time starter in the NFL. But being thrown into the mix like he was in Cleveland was not helpful. I actually see Quinn needing the exact same type of situation.

Derek reminds me a bit of a yound Favre in his lack of focus and forcing the issues but at the same time being able to swing it around the field and be great at times. So if like Anderson was playing for the Viks last year and being mentored by someone like Favre I think that would go a long way.

But I don’t know, just my unscientific gut feelings about it all.

Quinn update...

Heard this morning on ESPN that the Browns are seriously looking at QB options, including trading Quinn. Sounds like Holmgren wants to clean house. Here’s hoping that DA finds a home closer to his home – he’s meeting with Seattle today and Arizona later this week.

Oh, and what about Matt Moore

To change the topic a bit, but I think I read/heard in passing that he was slated to be the front-runner to be the starter for Carolina with Delhomme looking to be most likely released.

Heard anything about this situation?

Yes and yes

Delhomme has already been released (and due $12.5 million in guaranteed money) and Moore is scheduled to be the starter.

The Panthers want to interview Anderson to be Moore’s backup and the rumor mill is that they want to draft Canfield also. It should also be noted I’m making all this last stuff up.

I heard that the Panthers Owner

Is also the guy who reviews Medical Redshirts. Word on the street is that they denied Moevao so that they could sign him as well.
