Regular Season Finale Open Thread: Washington at Oregon State
Washington Huskies at Oregon St. Beavers, Mar 6, 2010 5:00 PM PST
Oregon State vs. Washington // 5:00, Gill Coliseum // TV on FSN
It's the final game of the regulars season for Oregon State, and here's the place for you to talk about it.
I have a playoff basketball game tonight (we're headed for Silverton), so I'll catch this game on DVR-- I won't be in the comments.

Beavs up by 1
Beavs 21, Wash 20

Spring means Baseball. Go Beavs
Funny enough I’ve never had big issues with their football teams, but I just can’t like Husky basketball. They are good, but they annoy me more than anyone in the Pac-10.
But they beat us way too easy on the inside and the Beaver team once again couldn’t just push their runs to the next level, had it cut to nine and with time left, sigh…I guess we get another shot at them next week.

Besides for Arizona State
This is the one team I didn’t want to play in the Pac-10 Tourney.
I Hate Your Ducks
Yep, I'm there with you
It is always hard to beat a team three times in one season, but yes ASU or UW are not in our range this year. Maybe next year, but that ain’t helping come this week.

But it there is ONE team I would love to wipe their cocky smiles off UW is it. Going to happen? Probably not, but I would love it.

Husky Hate!
The 1-3-1 does not even slow them down. I say blow their minds and come out man to man. Put Seth on Poindexter. It is not like the Beavs have anything to lose. I do not get that cocky street crap they pull because it seems like Coach Lorenzo is a good guy.
Anyone else a little puzzled at Robinson’s strategy in the last minute and a half. I am a big believer in extending the game by fouling quickly. It seemed like the Beavers were clueless in letting the Huskies run almost 35 off of the clock and then fouling. I know it is long shot but being down 10 with 90 seconds left is not impossible. i was not impressed with the way it was played.
If it was any other night
Then yes. But it was very classy of him to get all the Seniors out seperately so they could get their Strtanding Ovations. I know I sound soft, but it was highly unlikely for us to come back and those guys deserved a nice ovation after their great careers here.
I Hate Your Ducks
I kind-of agree with Connor here
And they basically seemed to hit all their FTs so not sure it would have mattered either way when they would have fouled.
IMO OSU’s chance to win that game came when we got it to nine but it slipped away. It was all decided the last minute unfortunately, and as Connor said it was a different night for there were some key seniors leaving tonight and they needed the extra bit of recognition for all the struggle, and success, they have put into the program.
I do not get that cocky street crap they pull because it seems like Coach Lorenzo is a good guy.
Yep, that is a lot of what I was getting at above, they have been doing this for the last few years and I just can’t wait until we finally do get it turned around and wipe away that smugness. I can go with being cocky and having energy in your play, but the UW crap gets old fast. I do like Overton though, he seems pretty classy. The others though, I don’t know, I guess it works for them though, but least favorite Pac-10 team for me in basketball.
The 1-3-1 does not even slow them down.
Yep again, and it looked like the zone actually worked okay against them (packed the middle nicely at times, not all the time though) and maybe more of that with some man-to-man mixed in. But need to score more points though, and REALLY need to slow down the fast breaks.

If Calvin's three pointer goes down,
then I think you see a completely different last 1:40.
I too thought it was a little early to throw in the towel, as I’ve seen 10 point leads erased in less time than that, and not just at the NBA level.
But it may have been a way for Craig to deliver the message that doing a few little things earlier would have put the team in a different position at that point.

Go Beavs!
You never know
There was a Beaver/Duck game in the Gary Payton era where the Beavs erased an 8 point lead in about 40 seconds. And if I remember correctly, won on a Bill Sherwood three pointer with a couple of seconds left.
I probably watch too much NBA but
a minute and a half is a lifetime and even Lamar Hurd commented about the sequence where the Beavers played very loose and wasted all those seconds, but you guys are right it is good to appreciate the seniors (and its not like the Beavs had the three ball going either) Also, I think if Haynes had hit that three from the top of the key to cut it to seven it may have been played differently.
Yup, that has to be the most run outs I have seen against the Beavers all season. The team really has to take of the ball on Thursday although the Huskies even fast breaked after a couple of Beaver makes.
Basketball is so interesting with match ups. Cal and Oregon like to run and the Beavs are able to control the tempo against them, but they cannot slow down Washington.
I totally agree about the loose play
But I think I was more focused on your comments about the fouling. I don’t know if quick ones would have made a difference and as we mentioned in the end he got to sub the seniors in a nice way.
I do agree and think they should have picked up the tempo a little and at least pressured the ball handlers more, but one thing is they were getting so burned by the more pressure defensive schemes. And really they were done and I think the emotions of the last game for some of these leaders such as the Tarvers and Roeland really started to hit everyone, so not a big deal in my opinion in how it ended. I guess I was kind-of done with that game myself.
Yep, UW has owned us over the years and so far the Robinson schemes haven’t broken through. But I guess on the bright side we have played much closer games with them this year so maybe (just maybe) we are closing the gap a bit.
My gut reaction guess is that Thursday will be a VERRRRYYY slowed down offensive game by the Beavs and lots of zone pack the middle defense. I would not be surprised to see it get a bit ugly with holding the ball until the last minute on shots.
Anyway, I actually do agree with much of what you are saying here mckalk, just agreed with Connor that it ended up being a nice send out for the seniors at the very end, even though it was a very ironic set up to allow for that.

Slowing it down
I think one difficulty with really slowing it down, is that the Beaves best play with under say 25 on the shot clock is the Schaft/Haynes pick play at the top of the key and in my opinion it has just not been nearly as effective this year. The rest of the league has seemed to figure it out. After that there are just not many options. The Huskies are willing to give you some nice looks, so that can keep the pace of the game up. I personally think the only way the Beavers win is if they have a lights out three point shooting game like they did in the CBI championship game with someone this time like Omari or Lathen hitting most of their opportunities.
I can go here for the most part
But I just don’t see the three pointers coming from this team, so slowing it down seems to be the best route in my opinion. I think if he can last the game plan should be to slow it down and get it to Burton down low. I agree about the Schaft/Haynes game has been way too inconsistent to go to (and not only for the other teams adjusting) on any type of regular basis. I think this will be a bit more of an unknown for the Huskies and also could provide an opportunity to get their big men in foul trouble.
Another problem with relying on long shots is that could be dangerous with longer rebounds and run outs with a team like UW.
I also think that we need a big (WSU type) game from Cunningham to have any shot at it. He got way too flustered Saturday and got into foul trouble.
I guess what I’m saying here is that we need a big game from the freshman! :)

typo above
meant to say “take care” of the ball. Sorry about the typo
I guess what I am unfortunately saying is that the Beavs need someone to have one of those lights games for them to have a chance to win. Usually when one team upsets a much better team they do something totally out of character. That is why I think that they have to shoot much better from outside then their season average, but if Joe Burton can have an 18/12 type night that would be good too!
No disagreement overall from me. I think we were just thinking slightly different scenarios that’s all.
I think we are on the same page generally and the sad part is what I’m reading in our comments here is that we don’t really see the Beavs having much of a chance Thursday. I know overall I feel this way, and very much wish it was different. I just don’t think we are ready to compete with the athletes UW brings to the games yet.
Here’s hoping that I’m totally wrong though!
