Game 29 Open Thread: Wash. State at Oregon State

Washington St. Cougars at Oregon St. Beavers, Mar 4, 2010 7:00 PM PST

Oregon State vs. Washington State  /  7:00 , Gill Coliseum  /  No TV

It's a busy night tonight with baseball playing against UC Riverside in Arizona State's tournament and the women playing up in Washington, but here's the place to chat about the second to last regular-season men's basketball game of the season.

The last regular season homestand of the year kicks off tonight, with the Beavers playing host to the Washington State Cougars. Last time these two teams met, the Beavers held Klay Thompson to just seven points but narrowly lost. This time around, they'll look to accomplish the same feat, yet come out in the green.

The Beavers sit at 7-9 in Pac-10 play heading into this game, which essentially means they could still finish in third if they pull a sweep and get some help from the teams above them in the standings. At this point, it's all about seeding in the Pac-10 tournament, which will be held next week in Los Angeles.

Here's your place to talk about the game.

Wow, was that the best half of the year or what?

33 to 15 OSU, and Cunningham has 15 points! One more to go!

No kidding

I’m obviously not watching, but it sounds like the Beavers are motivated and have been bullying the Cougars since the get-go.

Well as good as that first half was the second was not, BUT

With this team and this late in the season all that matters is the W and really doesn’t matter much how they do it now.

Wow!

Great 1st Half, and what I like to call a “Seattle U” 2nd Half. But like RVM said, a win is a win is a win.

We could of easily rolled over and called it quits, but we stuck with it when our shots couldn’t fall, and we got the win. Despite my mini Heart Attack, I haven’t been this proud of a team in a while.

Great win Beavers!

Actually a great point here and I totally agree, WSU had them on the ropes and looked ready to take the lead and not look back but the Beavs stuck with it and showed some guts to take control, and then at the end to hold WSU off again.

So, cough, cough, have to give the Cougs some props too for they came out in that second half with some fire and pride.

The second half run by the cougs had me in serious doubt.

We’ll need two full halves to get a W on Saturday.

Sat = Yep totally agree.

I want this one bad. I am sick of losing to the UCLA, ASU, and UW and how cocky those teams/fan bases have got over us the last few years (and sure there is a good reason why they have dominated us, especially during those really horrible years, but I’m personally sick of it all). We took care of the UO deal and still lacking the UCLA and ASU ones, but lets take it to the Huskies and show them what they will have to deal with the next few years!

I would love to see the freshmen (Cunningham and Burton) take another step forward on Saturday. The only thing that concerns me is Brandt… is he going to be a factor next year? He was such a highly touted guy coming in and was supposed to be a more physical Schaftenaar but I haven’t seen it yet.

REALLY want to beat the Huskies on Saturday. Will be there. Can’t wait.

Brandt = Yep, just seems he hasn’t quite fit in like the other two yet. His post play hasn’t shown anything, but we do have to admit that about anyone is more physical than Schaftenaar is (on a consistent basis). What I have noticed with Brandt though is he has a great shooting touch. But you know some players need more time making the adjustment to college ball, and it has been a rough road for Cunningham and Burton at times. It will be interesting to see if Brandt does indeed get more playing time next year.

Brandt has such a short leash that he must not be doing much to gain the trust of the coaching staff in practice. That kid comes in for 30 seconds, spazzes out and fouls someone or turns the ball over and boom, he’s back on the bench. I suppose that’s good though… right?

I suppose that’s good though… right?

Even though it is a different situation it has actually worked quite well with Cunningham. So, maybe a good thing yes?

But yes it very much seems to me he isn’t ready yet. And Robinson is a a coach not afraid to bench you or not play you if you are showing it.

Brandt status is interesting

Seems like Joe Burton has comfortably taken any role/minutes that Brandt could have filled this year. I think in non-conference Coach Robinson was assessing both of them and it became apparent that Burton was the better player at this stage. I read that Coach R is pursuing the 7 foot defensive specialist from the Idaho juco and that makes sense because the team will need someone to replace Schaft’s length next year. It makes me think that Brandt as fallen out of favor a litttle (I know it is very early in his career). At this point, coach is more comfortable giving walk on McShane those minutes and letting him play point-center than putting Brandt in the game. I hope he developes because the team will be loaded in the backcourt next year and needs a solid front court to get to the 20 win mark.
