Baseball Game 17 Open Thread: OSU vs. Maine

Oregon State vs. Maine, Game 4 // 1:00 PM, Goss Stadium // Radio on KPAM 860

Oregon State is going for the sweep against Maine today, and they'll do it with Matt Boyd (2-0, 1.93) on the mound.

Meanwhile, I'm down in the Valley of the Sun and I'm headed to Tempe to watch Arizona State take on Houston. The Sun Devils start Pac-10 play with a home series against California at Packard Stadium this week. The Beavers, of course, get an extra non-conference series before beginning conference play in two weeks.

Here's your place to chat about today's baseball games, as well as the NCAA basketball games.

Disappointing, but not surprising.

’Zags would have been better off with a lower seed. 11 or 12 seeds can actually be better than anything 7-10.

Hey Connor!

Sorry man, I was watching him hit that one in person!

Was at the game! Those HRs were awesome, but should have scored a ton more runs on that pitcher, but a W is a W and as I wanted took the series.

Any idea on the Ducks?

I noticed the Ducks have almost passed last seasons win total. What are the drivers? Increased talent, easier schedule, player improvement?

by mckalk on Mar 21, 2010 5:24 PM PDT reply actions

All three you mentioned

But especially the easy schedule. I’d be surprised if they do well against the tough teams in the Pac-10.

by ConnorOSU on Mar 21, 2010 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

They just had to improve overall and it is showing this year.

But yes look at the schedule and it hasn’t been that hard (I will say OSU’s schedule hasn’t been the most challenging either, but compare the way each team handled the away at Hawai’i series), UO has a couple very easy games coming up against Southern Utah and then also two conference series that will tell us a lot about what they are bringing with being away at Arizona this next weekend and then at home against ASU.

I would kind-of expect that UO will run into some depth problems as the season progresses too, for their talent has improved but I don’t know how deep they are yet as a program.

Overall I expect them to be competitive this year and they are showing that. But overall I’m much more worried about UCLA!

Ducks did well again yesterday.

The Ducks had a good showing at Fresno, right? Is that program down? They won the CWS recently. I guess you have to give the program credit for getting Horton. Good coaches are good coaches.

You are right the Arizonas should give us a better idea, but 16-5 or whatever it is…is pretty impressive.

by mckalk on Mar 22, 2010 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

Yes, yes, and yes

You are on the same page as I am, whether or not that page is correct we’ll see!

Fresno State has been very much a disappointment since the CWS win. They barely made it back to the regional last year (in their defense of the title) and basically because they won all their WAC tournament games but lost both regional games. They are 10 and 10 this year. Still going there and beating them fairly easily and taking the series was impressive by the ducks.

I’m not a bit Horton fan to say the least but yes he’s a good coach and he’s not going to roll over.

Yep, they indeed do have a good record overall and shows improvement, and seems like they have things going on both sides right now. The problem is that Seattle and Nevada are not really very good teams so hard to gauge those series, but the ducks took care of business. They also beat Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State, which are decent teams but again both are a bit down this year. The problem in trying to figure them out is that they have only beaten two (barely) winning record teams overall though, and that was Hawai’i who is 10 and 9 and UO actually lost that series and Cal State Fullerton who is also 10 and 9 and very much a disappointment so far.

Again, they have done what they needed to do really beyond for a follow up to last season, but I think the most interesting games so far has been the UW games the ducks split with the huskies in Eugene. So what UO team is the real one? The one that beat a conference opponent fairly easily or the one that lost to a down conference opponent at home?

I will also add this is no way a bash on the ducks for much can be said about OSU so far (except for that I like Coach Casey much more than Horton!). The road to settling this all out begins this upcoming weekend!

They have set themselves up at least going into P-10 Play

Being a Duck hater, I hope they are not for real, but if they go something like 15-12 in league play and stay above .500 with the rest of their non-conference (Gonzaga, East Tenn, Portland). I would think they would have a shot at the tournament. Here’s to hoping they flame out in league play because I don’t want to think of the play the story would get if they make it back in year two of the restart!!!!

All joking aside, if they can do it, they deserve it. I checked they went 14-42 last year.

Conference play is going to be hard

Pac-10 is very tough this year it looks like.

A team like UO, SC, Cal, or WSU that comes out of it below .500 probably won’t get an invite. And that is pretty likely for some of those four. A team like OSU if we go under .500 (slightly under) could still have a shot, as with ASU, UA, Stanford, and UCLA.

We could be in for an exciting conference season this year.

Baseball in the Pac seems to be making up for basketball!

RPI with baseball?

I dont know how the RPI thing works in baseball, but I am assuming the selection committee as some equivalent they consider. I remember the year the Beavers got left out of the tourney they had a pretty good RPI, but also dropped a few inexcusable non-conf games. I think Utah Valley St was one of them.

by mckalk on Mar 22, 2010 4:31 PM PDT reply actions

Not sure

Found 2009 standings, (http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2009MBArpi1.html), but nothing for 2010 so don’t know when this kicks in and totally don’t know how it all works.

Hmm, I'm a big OSU baseball fan and see the world pretty much through orange and black glasses

but 8th seems a bit high to me.

Hawai’i has a winning record. Tennessee is only 500 so far. Utah and Cal Riverside both have slightly winning records. Portland has a good overall record. And we played ASU tough.

But overall doesn’t seem like the strength of opponents is top ten worthy. Does RPI take into account stuff like scores and series wins? Those actually have been fairly impressive I will agree.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m VERY happy about where the team is at right and we look pretty darn good, and I think we are a 10 – 12 ranked team right now, but just surprised by this placement.

(Yes, I realize they said this is an unofficial RPI and all, but sounds like they have pretty solid formulas going.)

by rvm on Mar 23, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Fun to look at

but your are right, there is not even a RPI calculation listed. Interesting how a team with at 0-29 record had a better RPI than a 15-30 team!

by mckalk on Mar 22, 2010 5:19 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, I think the Beavs are a tad high, but who knows with RPI

Damn, there are a lot of D-1 baseball teams. Poor Coppin St. is still next to last even with a 5-11 record. I would have given them a higher RPI for ending their 45 game losing streak!

To be real honest, I do not see where the Beaver and Duck schedule have been that different and surprisingly the records are not to far apart, but there they are separated by 53 spots on Boyds RPI. I do not know what the selection committe uses. I guess if they consider RPI they it becomes somewhat important. Who knows.
