Hawaii Series Recap

The Beavers went 3-1 in Honolulu to take their opening series of the 2010 season. The Beavers ended up outscoring the Warriors 26-14, proving that their bats were hot, and for the final three games, the pitching was superb. Now let's take a look at Game 1.

In the first game of the series the Beavers won, 10-6. But the Warriors would draw first blood. In his first outing of the year, Tyler Waldron had a tough time settling down. As did the rest of the Defense. The Beavers made two errors in the first inning on the road to a pair of Hawaii runs. It could of been much worse though, as Hawaii left the bases loaded.

Up until the 4th Inning, the Offenses were kept quiet after the Beavers Defensive letdown in the 1st Inning. But in the fourth, the Beavers found their Offensive stroke. Oregon State drove in three runs to take the lead, highlighted by a Stefen Romero 2 RBI Double. But Hawaii took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning with a 2 Out Grand Slam by Kevin Macdonald to give the Warriors a 6-3 lead.

Star-divide

The Beavers could have easily laid down and called it a night, but instead they slowly chipped away the lead. In the fifth inning, Brandon Hayes scored on an error by the Hawaii Defense to make the score 6-4. In the next inning, both Parker Berberet and Matt Boyd recorded RBI's to tie the game up at 6. Then, after a scorless 7th Inning and with Beaver Nation getting tired, the Beavers found their bats again for two runs and the lead in the 8th Inning. After holding the Warriors scroless yet again, Stefen Romero jacked a Two Run Homer to left field for a 10-6 win.

The time of game was 3 hours and 30 minutes and the attendance was 4,110. Now let's take a look at Game 2.

In the second game of the series the Beavers won, 7-3. Once again though, Hawaii would draw first blood thanks to a Kolten Wong RBI Double. In the next inning, Collin Bennett hit a leadoff homer to give Hawaii a 2-0 lead. But the Beavers would get their bats going in the third.

After Michael Miller and Tyler Smith singled, Adalberto Santos drove them in with a Double to left center field. Rob Folsom would continue the hit fest as he drove in the third run of the inning. The Beavers were not finished yet though. Stefen Romero brought in Rob Folsom to give the Beavers a 4-2 lead going into the 4th Inning.

Things slowed down up until the 6th Inning, with both pitchers playing great. But the Beavers would break it open in the sixth. The first run came from Jared Norris on a Wild Pitch. Then, Tyler Smith singled to Center Field to give the Beavers a 7-2 lead going into the bottom half of the sixth. At first, it looked like the Warriors would creep back into the game. But after a Kevin Macdonald RBI, the Warriors were retired without any major damage. The game remained scoreless from then on, with Kevin Rhoderick getting the save in the 9th.

The time of game was 3 hours and the attendance was 2,830. Now let's take a look at Game 3.

In the third game of the series the Beavers lost, 5-4. The game was scoreless up until the third inning when Carter Bell scored on an error by the 2nd Basemen to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The Beavers would take a 2-0 lead thanks to a Jared Norris Sacrifice Fly in the 4th Inning. In the 5th Inning, Greg Garcia grounded out to bring Pi'ikea Kitamura in to score to make it a one run ball game.

The Warriors picked up where they left off in the 6th Inning thanks to a Jeffrey Van Doornum RBI Double to tie the game. Hawaii would then take the lead on a Sean Montplaisir RBI Single. The Beavers would tie the game up in the next inning with a nicely manufactured run before Stefen Romero homered in the 8th to give the Beavers a 4-3 advantage.

The Beavers took their one run lead into the ninth, but instead of leaving hot Sam Gaviglio in, casey turned to the Bullpen for closer Kevin Rhoderick. Kevin quickly recorded the first out, but pinch hitter Christian Johnson homered to tie the game at 4. After that, K-Rod struck out the next batter to get the Beavers one out away from Extra Innings. But then Kolten Wong Doubled down the Right Field Line, and K-Rod walked Kevin Macdonald. But Kevin wasn't finished imploding yet. A Wild Pitch advanced both runners, and Kevin left one over the plate for a Collin Bennett Walk Off Single.

The time of game was 3 hours and the attendance was 3,130. Now let's take a look at Game 4.

In the final game of the series the Beavers won, 5-0. After a scoreless first inning, the Beavers drew first blood with a run in the 2nd Inning. The game remained close up until the sixth inning, when Rob Folsom drove in two runs with a single to left center. After holding the Warriors scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, Adalberto Santos and Parker Berberet both recorded RBI's to give Oregon State a 5-0 lead. After that, the Beavers held Hawaii scoreless the rest of the way and escaped the Islands with a 3-1 series win.

The time of game was 3 hours and 15 minutes and the attendance was 2,430.

Overall, I thought the Beavers played some great Baseball this weekend. Three wins were great, but the only disappointing thing was that we should of won on Sunday. With that being said, I still think Kevin is a great closer and we will need to rely on him a lot this season.

Next up for the Beavers is a three game series against Tennessee in Corvallis. The Volunteers are 3-0 this season.

                                                                                  Go Beavs!

Nice wrap up

Yes, it should have been 4 and 0!

Totally there about wondering if they shouldn’t have left Gaviglio in there to close out the deal in game three, but it is Rhoderick’s job on the team to close out games. But just wondered after calling on Rhoderick to close the day before if it wasn’t asking a bit much to be fresh enough to close two in a row so early in the season. I do think we need to find another closer because, as we saw also with last year, Kevin can’t do it all, as good as he is.

But I know there is a concern with pitch counts this early in the season and if it all pays off down the road then it is worth it, and losing one in the ninth inning isn’t all that big of a deal at this stage in the season.
