Cincinnati game 9/19 @ 3:45: Sell out Reser
For anyone doubting that this will be the most important home game of 2009 here's a little bit of information for you...
I'm not looking past UNLV because that's going to be a very difficult game, on the road, against a Mountain West conference opponent - see BYU over Okalhoma and Utah's recent success - however it appears that the Bearcats have a pretty good team based upon their performance at Rutgers on Monday and their already talking about their QB as a future Heisman candidate.
The only reason I' m bringing up the UC game is because I want a sellout. And I want it loud! I absolutely have no reason to doubt that Beaver nation will show up, however I also know that recent non-conference home games tend to be more subdued than Pac-10 games and I also have concerns, as documented in the latter comments here that our fans will show up, so I'm starting early. Get the word out, invite your friends, family, anyone you know that has an interest in the Beavers and wants to watch, what should be, a pretty good game.
I want Reser sold out, because to put it mildly Reser needs to be rockin' on September 19th. I know the pond chickens have a 12:30PM game vs. Utah that day so I-5 traffic will be a pain, but dont let that dampen your enthusiasm, the team needs each of us there and I hope everyone who reads BTD will be at this game, and plans on being LOUD!

Oh, I totally agree about this game for I feel the next two games will be huge in setting the tone for this season.
For those fans that are in the area I also would love to see a nice Beaver Nation showing in Las Vegas next week.

Sadly, I will not be at this particular game.
I know, I suck. Had this weekend marked off months ago, before I had a chance to consult the schedule and game times. Very sad. I mean, if I’m not in Corvallis to see a game first hand, does it really even happen at all? Is Mike Parker just screwing with me and calling a fake game? I’ll never know. It’s like my own version of The Truman Show.

Just as long as your version ends up 12-0 for the season, okay? I’ll forgive you…

That should be a good game.
Cincy looks pretty good. Hopefully we’re coming off a great week at UNLV and ready for a little payback. I really want to see that D get it together and stop the pass. I trust that D-line.

This game will be a big time test of the defense. I’ve said it before but they are a spread offense and we know all too well what happened last year against this type of offense.
I actually see a bit of a rough patch at UNLV (but enough to get the W) then the D really coming together for Cincy.
I’m worried about both upcoming non-conference games, but at the same time excited to see how the team can come together for I think solid wins in both games will go a long way this season. For the Cincy game I’m on that fence about being glad they are pretty good this year and concerned they are better than expected.

Let me get this straight
This game will likely feature two teams both in the Top 25 (barring the UNLV trap springing) and we need a specific post to sell out a stadium that only seats 40,000? If the stadium doesn’t sell out I refuse to defend Beavers or Beaver fans for the rest of the season.

Well, you can always start with ArbyOSU on your Oregon State fan poop list if it doesn’t sell out.

seriously though
I’m very excited to have picked this as one of my games this year. It is stacking up to be a really good game, and should be loud as hell if the possible hype going in pans out with both teams going in strong and undefeated.

BUT can’t overlook the UNLV game for I think it is going to be a tough one. I hope not and that the Beavs take control early and keep the foot down on the Rebels for an easy win, but just thinking it stacks up as a sneaky tough one (just ask ASU last year).

UNLV's no joke, let's make that clear.
The Beavs SHOULD beat them.
Should.
Will they? I hope so. It’s a great warm up for the D against a spread that’s probably not as explosive as Cincy’s.
Oh, and I shouldn’t be on anyone’s poop list that isn’t jtlight from AtQ… or my wife… I’m probably on her list too.

Without your good word, what will we do?!
On a more serious note, do you think a win at UNLV is enough to spring us into the top 25? It seems like it would be but I dunno, I won’t be surprised either way.
Cincy is the first real home game. I expect a sell out.

On a more serious note, do you think a win at UNLV is enough to spring us into the top 25? It seems like it would be but I dunno, I won’t be surprised either way.
Depends doesn’t it? First on how we win the game. There is enough respect for the Rebels that a W will be respected but if it is a sloppy 20 to 17 type of deal or they score 42 to our 49 I don’t think we do. But if we win in a no questions type of way then maybe. Second have to have some of the teams lose in the 15-25 range too.
Oh, and we cannot lose this game, for not only a possible ranking but also for the confidence for the season. Cincy stacking up to be a huge game, but UNLV is almost more of an important game in the long run. If Cincy came in strong and beat us, in a good hard fought game, it wouldn’t be as bad (even if it is at home) as losing to UNLV in any type of fashion. My thoughts.

I hear that. I think if we were to lose at UNLV we’ll need to plow through Cincy and three or four other teams after that to crack the top 25. We’re on the verge right now but losing, in any fashion, at UNLV would be crippling. Think of the the Stanford aftermath last year.
A win at UNLV and a close loss to Cincy would give us similar results, though it would be a shorter road back to respectability.
Bottom line is we need both games.

I agree that the UNLV game is huge
But it sounds like you’re saying that if we lose are season is over. Remember Stanford last year? And Utah? (Even though we should of won that game) With Riley as our coach, I don’t care if we lose to Portland State, this team will bounce back and play with the same amount of heart as always.

Not over,
But it will create a big time hole to dig out of. With the way this season stacks up these non-conference games are essential to take advantage of going into the tough conference schedule. As I mentioned above losing the Cincy in a hard fought game would be much better than losing to UNLV in any type of loss (both in terms of national notice/respect and most importantly team confidence and swagger).
I believe this team has the talent and potential to be very good, but there is a lot of raw young talent to tap into. As such the team needs to win the games they should win (PSU, UNLV, UA, Stanford, UCLA, UW, and WSU) and be at least close in the games they will not be favored in (possibly CIncy, most likely ASU, USC, Cal, and UO). If they can do this they well should win some of those non-favored games and make a nice run this year. And if they happen to lose to someone like UCLA but still have a great start to the year going it will lessen that upset.
But losing to UNLV will put the team back into that Riley slow start mentality and I honestly think if they lose to UNLV that losses to Cincy, UA, and ASU could well follow (with recovering finally against Stanford), but vice versa if they win they can build on each game and go into Tempe with a ton of momentum.
Again, just my thoughts and maybe too melodramatic but it is how I feel right now.

And now the shorter, more emotional, reply
I’m just plain tired of putzing around with our non-conference schedule and losing games we should have won and being blown out in others. It is time for Riley to step it up.

What I'm saying
Is that we’ve been in a big time hole before and have done just fine. Just my opinion though.

BUT I’m saying isn’t it time to expect more than digging a hole and then being just fine? I think the program can do better.

But yes
It has always been impressive how much Riley can rally the teams into that don’t give up mentality. I do like it, I thought the Pitt bowl game last season was actually a really barometer of how much heart Riley can get out his players.
I just want more.

We can do better
And you do bring up a great point. But let’s just go back to last year. We lose to Stanford out of the gate. It wasn’t a horrible loss, but it felt as if our season might of been over before it even started. The next week we get hammered in front of 110,000 people and while we played a great team, everybody just felt horrible because we were 0-2.
Then, all of a sudden we aniliate Hawaii and beat the number one team in the nation. Suddenly things aren’t looking so bad. Then we are thrust into a thrilling Rose Bowl run that I’m sure no one will ever forget even though it had a sour ending.
So finally, to get to my point. Losing is a part of Football. Especially demoralizing ones. (As it sems at the time.) But we always find a way to bounce back no matter what. And I would even take a loss to Stanford or UNLV if it meant we would be one win away from a Rose Bowl. And the thing is that even though we lost to Oregon, we’re going to win that game sometimes. Especially if we have Quizz.
I don’t know, maybe I’m crazy. But if we lose to UNLV on Saturday we will all be crushed on Sunday and Monday. But by Tuesday we will be so stoked for the Cincy game, that we will barely remember last Saturday. That’s the great thing about Football. There is always another game next week. And another chance to make a run for the roses.

While I agree with you about how last year went
I just am more concerned this year with the way the schedule stacks up if the team loses an ugly early game like losing to UNLV and it will be much harder to bounce back.
So yes I understand where you are coming from, for I personally thought the 2006 season was the maybe the best overall, and was my personal favorite. But again the team started out ugly and people were calling for Riley and Matt Moore’s head, and then it turned around to be a great season.
The problem though is that the program can’t keep digging these early holes, it will catch up with the team at some point and bite us all in the ass. This season could be that way if we don’t take advantage of a challenging but favorable early part of the season. I just worry that the Cincy, UA, and ASU stretch is going to be tough enough without losing to a team we will be favored to, and should, beat.
Plus even though I’m really proud of that 2006 season if the team started better just think what that season could have been? Or take last year and if we beat Stanford think about what that season could have been even with losing to Penn State and Utah? Even though the team recovered nicely until the last game, an argument could be made that losing to Stanford put the team in a hole that it never fully recovered from. I think it is time to get out of these what could have been scenarios, even with how much I respect the ways in which Riley’s teams gut it out all four quarters of a game and all season long.

But to add on quickly here, even if we did lose to UNLV and struggled for part of the season and say ended with a 9 or 10 win season I would be a pretty happy fan, a bit disappointed sure, but still happy enough!

Most of your points
I agree with. Except I think it’s unfair to say that the early holes will eventually bite us in the ass. As we have noted above, Riley has proven to us time and time again that we can dig out of those holes. So until we lose to UNLV and only finish with say, seven wins, I don’t think that we should make assumptions like that.
Will it happen eventually, yes of course. But until then I think that Riley has earned enough of our respect that we shouldn’t assume that will happen with one of his teams. Once again, that’s just the way I look it. I just think we have differing opinions. (For once)
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football

differing by a fraction me thinks!
I think we agree with most of each other’s views.
In the past I’ve been a little more forgiving, but I really feel with the level of talent Riley is bringing in on a constant basis in many different skilled areas that I just think it is time for the program to make a big time run at things over the next few years.
So I think my standards have increased recently.
12 and 0? Nah, not there yet, but losing one or two (or even three) close games to really good teams is what I want this program to aim for now. Losing to teams like Stanford and UNLV should not be viable options in “we can dig out of this hole” any longer.
So to flip your argument to my needs, I don’t think we should allow for the assumption that we can lose early games and recover like the team has been able to do in the past.
BUT, when it comes down to it we agree about the most important point here: OSU needs to beat UNLV this weekend!

The talent level
Isn’t exactly great. We get a four or five star every now and then but we usually only have three or lower stars.

Going to have to disagree a bit here again. I think the talent pool under Riley has improved over the years. I’m not really about the stars deal (especially in football). Look at the QB depth we have and the steals in talent with James and Quizz, and I think the team has some sneaky good talent at WR (whether or not that can be developed is yet to be seen) and finally the defensive players he and Banker get are very solid. Look at the number of NFL players the team is turning out on a regular basis, and this should only help with recruiting.
I’ll stop here, two disagreements between you and I in one thread is getting a bit scary! We usually are so on the same page!

Top 25
I think we will. But I agree with RVM below. If we beat them 20-17 in an ugly game we probably won’t get in. But if we win 20-17 in a hard fought, 1 turnover game than yes, we should definitely get in.

One more reason...
Giovanni Bernard will be making his visit to OSU for the Cincy game. I hope he’s impressed by a rocking Reser! Would be nice if big bro could be on hand, too.
Gio: “Whoa…”
Yve: “See? What did I tell ya?”

Very important point here...
Bernard version 2.0 is going to need to see a loud, orange stadium on the day of the Cincy game. I think he only made it out to one game when Yve was here… I think it was the UW game where Yve was robbed of his touchdown and the dumbass refs allowed UW to run it back to midfield…

dumbest?

That might have been the strangest, and most frustratingly called, games I can remember in OSU football history. I can’t believe we actually pulled out the W on that one.
