Labor Day College Football Open Thread
Here is your place to talk about the two games today. At 1:00 PM on ESPN, Cincinnati takes on the Scarlett Knights of Rutgers. The Beavers take on Cincy in week three, so there is a good scouting oppurtunity there. Then at 5:00 PM on ESPN, the Hurricanes of Miami visit the Florida State Seminoles.

Bearcats roll in first possession!
Two and a half minutes to drive the length of the field for a 7-0 lead. Tony Pike was 6 for 6 for 71 yards, and looked to be in mid-season form for Cincinnati. That should have gotten the attention of everyone in the Oregon State secondary.

With the entire offensive line back for Rutgers
from last year, the all-new Bearcat front in the 3-4 got ground up by a 20 play scoring drive that took over 11 and a half minutes, and included two fourth down conversions. This by a Scarlet Knight offense that looked slow at best, but was able to overcome a couple of big negative plays.
Based just on the first exchange, the Bearcats look like a team constructed to play a 55-52 game against a team like the Beavers.

Pike reaches 8-8 before throwing one away,
and that was a good decision, and a good throw. And he can run in the open field too. A blitz finally slows down the Bearcat offense as the first quarter ends, with the score tied 7-7.

Rutgers holds Cincy to a field goal on the Bearcats' second drive,
after Pike’s third down throw is caught, but short of a first down, early in the second quarter. Pike continues to look better than any QB in the Pac-10. He is just about the whole show though, at least so far.

Nice sack for the Cincy D on 3rd Down
Here comes the punt for Rutgers.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Cincinnati holds Rutgers on their second drive,
by dropping a LB onto the line, so they were in a 4 man front, whether they call it that or not. A coverage sack, a penalty, and the Bearcats start their third possession in Rutgers territory. The Scarlet Knights look like a second division team so far, even in the Big East, as they don’t seem quick at all.

Pike is picked off
Rutgers ball down 10-7.

Cincy is looking pretty good
I’m getting pretty excited for our game against them on the 19th.

Rutgers intercepts a screen pass
Pike threw into heavy traffic. A DE that dropped into coverage made the interception.
Rutgers messes up the exchange though, and a sack happens. But Aaron Webster, the only returning starter on defense for the Bearcats gets his clock cleaned, and has to come out. He looks like he will be fine though.

Aaron Webster
Comes back into the game and picks off the Rutgers QB. First and 10 for Cincy.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Bearcat's Webster comes back on,
and a pass off a Rutgers receiver’s hands is intercepted. Pike is 14 of 17 now, running a lot out of the no huddle, and running Rutgers ragged.

Travis Kelce in for the touchdown
For the Bearcats. With Pike through the air and Kelce on the ground, the Bearcats are set at Quarterback.

After Review
The call stands. 16-7 Bearcats.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Travis Kelsey comes on for Pike in the wildcat formation
and he gets a big gain, and then the touchdown. Bearcats up 17-7 with 6:35 left in the first half.

After the Extra Point
Cincy takes the lead 17-7 with 6:35 left in the half.

A sack for the Bearcats,
but they are bringing extra blitzers to be effective. This one was an overload against the Rutgers left tackle.
Another Rutgers punt, and Cincy has the ball at their 29 with 4:34 until halftime.

Mardy Gilyard looks really good
Maybe even as good as Stroughter. I’m starting to worry about our game against them. Should I be?
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Wow
Two timeouts for Cincy before they run their play.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Touchdown Gilyard
Cincy takes a 17 point lead. Rutgers needs a score before halftime or it’s going to be awfully tough for them to come back in the second half.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Pike is fearless, and can and will throw into any coverage.
With no pressure, he is deadly. And though they throw a lot, over 220 yards already, they are so efficient, they shorten the game. Pike doesn’t look at all like he did in the Orange Bowl, and another touchdown toss to Gilyard makes it 24-7 with 2:30 left until halftime.
The Beaver defense that couldn’t pressure Drew Hubel will have to find a way to get a lot more pressure on Pike, or the secondary will be scorched. At best, the Beaver offense will still need to score often.

Interception for Cincy
Rutgers is looking horrible ever since I tuned in.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Touchdown Bearcats
This isn’t even close anymore. 31-7 Cincy.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Another tipped pass picked off
and Pike has 1:46 to try to knock Rutgers out. First down on the first completion, six yards on the next catch, and a touchdown on a screen route that turns into a long run by Isiah Pead. 284 yards passing and a 31-7 Bearcat lead.

Yet another interception for the Rutgers QB
And the Boo Birds are out in Piscataway.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Since that first drive,
when the Bearcats were crunched, they have adjusted. But without a four man rush, they give up a huge play.
Back to a four man rush, and Rutgers QB Dominic Natale throws up his third interception of the half. This one wasn’t a tipped ball though, he threw it right to a Bearcat.
31-7 at halftime.

Erin Andrews is doing
The Miam-FSU game tonight. That game just got 10x better.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Rutgers comes out with a freshman QB, Tom Savage,
who promptly drives Rutgers into Bearcat country, but an overload on the left side of the Rutgers line (are you paying attention, Michael and Grant?), leads to another sack. And Rutgers stalls, but pins Cincy at their 7.
Andy Wooldridge
Go Beavs!
Brian Kelly's offensive game plan is sound
and varied. Pike leads the Bearcats down to the two, and Kelcey comes in for the finishing shot from the Wildcat. A 93 yard drive makes it 38-7. The Rutgers defense hardly offered any real resistance.
Andy Wooldridge
Go Beavs!
Rutgers sputters again,
but the Bearcats don’t. Jacob Ramsey goes for 62 yards on a draw on third and twelve.
For a team that some were talking about contending for the Big East title, the Scarlet Knights are in shambles. They remind me of WSU last year. A few good players, and a team that can do some things good. But absolutely no team speed.
Pike leads another 9 play, 85 yard scoring drive, bringing the total yardage up to 510 yards with 1:10 left in the third quarter, and a 45-7 lead.
But the Scarlet Knights have played so poorly since the first offensive series that it raises questions about how much to read into the Bearcats’ performance. It doesn’t change the fact that if Pike isn’t pressured, he will be spectacular.
Andy Wooldridge

After the 3rd Quarter
Cincinnati-45, Rutgers-7
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Rutgers next 4 opponents
are Howard, Florida International, and after Maryland (who California destroyed), Texas Southern. So even if they go 4-0, until they play Pitt, we won’t learn anything more about this team. For those that question having an FCS opponent on your schedule, what about anyone that has two?
Cincinnati should shell FCS foe Southeast Missouri State, so there is nothing to learn there either.
The freshman Savage leads Rutgers on a long 80 yard scoring drive, but it is still 45-15 in the fourth quarter, despite a successful two point conversion pass. Hard to tell how much of that was the Bearcat defense being vulnerable, and how much was the Bearcat defense taking the fourth quarter off.
Andy Wooldridge
Go Beavs!
Pike puts the baseball cap on,
with a 362 yard throwing day. Kelly is doing what Riley did in the fourth quarter, getting a look at a lot of reserves on offense.
We get the first look of the day at the Bearcat punter, who pins Rutgers at their 10 yard line.
Andy Wooldridge
Go Beavs!
Intentional grounding in the endzone
costs Rutgers a safety, and why their game with Pitt will be an ESPN game is an absolute mystery.

why does Lou Holtz have a job?
and would the Civil War be better served if it was the first game every year like FSU-Miami so it would be easier to work out a Nat’l TV deal?
"Put your drawers on, and take your gun off."
It might be
Now that you got me thinking about it that would be kinda cool to hold it on the first weekend of College Football.
Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
Civil War at the start of the season
would be terrible. So are conference games the first week. Way to much of a down side, for not enough of an up side. Much better to use the game for a non-conference game that fits the program in a given year, be it a tune up for a retooled team, or a big intersectional game, which will get the TV attention if you are winning most of your games.
Andy Wooldridge

Cincy Coach Brian Kelley extends his record to 23-6,
and has had five different starting QBs in that time. His stock as a head coach took another justified tick up today.
The Bearcat defense didn’t face any speed today, and the three man front doesn’t work. But when they augment it with a blitz, which is the idea, it might be another matter.
Even against a slow defense, Pike and the Bearcats are obviously a quality offense. Beaver defensive coach Mark Banker has his work cut out for him.
It will not look like the last outing against a Big East team, that 3-0 win over Pitt, in two weeks in Reser.

Beaver Nation
Interesting comments on comcast the “Fan” with Suke & Ropp. Discussion was based on why don’t the fans at Reser stadium not have the “Passion” that other college venues have. As a true beaver fan, I will admit that the fans at Autzen are far more passionate. As per the discussion went, if we can’t sell out a game with USC, a team that is #1 in the nation (last year). then what does that tell the nation about beaver ball?
it was early, cold and wet
and we were playing an FCS/I-AA school…
I don’t blame some fans for not coming down.
"Put your drawers on, and take your gun off."
I do.
A segment of Beaver nation is still learning what it means, and what it takes, to be a first tier program.
I understand why, after thirty years of being a last tier program; it takes time. But it has been a decade now, and a rainy day should never keep the fans away. Saturday should have been a sell-out.
Until the day comes where you can’t tell if it is USC or PSU or ASU in town, and it doesn’t matter, those first tier programs, like many in the SEC, but also Penn St., etc., will rightly continue to contend that OSU, and much of the Pac-10 (this is a problem several places) are still not at their level.
The Huskies get it, 75,000 for a team that tied the conference losing streak, and the Ducks get at least this part of it. More Beavers than ever get it, now we just need to get that last 10%.

this is why i don't blame them, yet
I understand why, after thirty years of being a last tier program; it takes time.
"Put your drawers on, and take your gun off."
I know I've been down this road before, but
So are you saying that if I’m doing other things in life, can only afford to go to a couple games a season, etc. that I’m a bad fan?
I’ve never really understood this “I blame the fans” mentality. The whole USC sell out thing is a bit of a misnomer too if we really get down to it. The stadium was loud and the crowd helped the team win that game, and it wasn’t like it was 1/2 full or anything. I bet the players once they got into the game had no idea that was not a perfect (or in UO counting a 110%) sell out. I couldn’t make it since it was late Thursday game and again they jack up the ticket price for SC games. So again does this put the blame on me as a lesser fan?
What about the UO game? Is it my fault the team looked like third tier team that game? Even though I’m not one of them I can understand why a fan might not be too excited to go to another game after that loss, the team needs to deliver too.
Look, I totally understand the need to support the team and the need get as many out as we can, but reality is reality so why alienate segments of Beaver Nation (like me) who try their best but can’t give their full support (I would love to do the season tickets and someday hope to afford them both in time commitment and expenses)?
And I sat through many many of those games of the past when the Beavs were stinking up the field and I would love to be able to see how far this program has come in person as much as I can, but don’t blame me if I can’t get there for every PSU or USC or so on game.

I'm not saying
you, or any other fan, is a “bad” fan (your term), if you can only afford a couple of games, have to work, etc. Because you support the Beavers to the extent that you can.
But the fans that can afford to go, had the day off, etc., but decide not to just because it is rainy out, or it is “just Portland State”, are another matter.
That choice is ok, if that is what they want to do. But those that make that choice need to understand that making that choice means they don’t get to complain about where the Beavers are ranked, why they don’t recruit better, or why TV or bowl games “don’t respect us.” And often it is those “I only go to the big games” fans that are often the ones complaining about the very problem they are contributing to.
Because empty seats, and especially empty sections, say very clearly to recruits, tv managers, and bowl representatives, not to mention the regional and national media, that there aren’t that many people that the Beavers are important to.
Andy Wooldridge

Yes, my term, but inferred by the "blame game"
You were the one who said you “blamed” fans for not going. Additionally, I was partial responding to the lack of passion in the original posting (sorry, didn’t totally break those out). If I am blamed for that type of thing or seen as lacking passion for my team I’m going to conclude that you, and/or others, don’t think I’m a true fan:
A segment of Beaver nation is still learning what it means, and what it takes, to be a first tier program.
I understand why, after thirty years of being a last tier program; it takes time. But it has been a decade now, and a rainy day should never keep the fans away. Saturday should have been a sell-out.
Those are pretty straightforward criticisms of the fanbase, in my opinion, which counts as me. To me this struck me as the age-old argument of the “true” fan who will go to all the games versus who is the “fair weather” fan who picks and chooses when to be a fan. Initially you did not seem to be making finer reality distinctions.
I for the most part personally agree with this clarification from your initial stance though:
That choice is ok, if that is what they want to do. But those that make that choice need to understand that making that choice means they don’t get to complain about where the Beavers are ranked, why they don’t recruit better, or why TV or bowl games "don’t respect us." And often it is those "I only go to the big games" fans that are often the ones complaining about the very problem they are contributing to.
But will play devil’s advocate here and say even for those type of fans why can’t they? Why do we need to alienate them? All fan bases will have these fans and yes I know programs like UW, Penn State, and even UO have strong bases that seem to go through all the good and bad. But in reality they have the exact type of concerns and blaming.
By the way “my term” is still implied by this:
But the fans that can afford to go, had the day off, etc., but decide not to just because it is rainy out, or it is "just Portland State", are another matter.
What it comes down to for me personally is that I don’t want to put it back on the fans. Casual fans are just fine with me, I’m not one of them (at least I have the delusion of being a big time OSU sports fan!), but they are just as important as I am. I think it is more up to the team, the sports program, the university, the other very active fans, etc. to get the casual fans excited about going to the games in a positive way. And not in some “you’re not passionate enough,” “you are just a fair weather fan, gear up,” or “the UO and UW teams sell out so much more than us, we suck” manner. Just my thoughts.
Oh, and don’t feel bad, I’ve been the Grinch about this type of thing before on the board here (just ask VD Special). Not totally singling you out, just an issue that I have a few random thoughts about! :)

The Huskies have all the tradition
We don’t. I think that is one of the factors. I know we have been doing great lately but the 28 straight losing seasons are still fresh in some people’s minds.

A lot of people
Couldn’t get to the USC game because of work. Add the fact that they jack up the ticket prices for the USC game I can’t really blame anybody for the fact that they didn’t go. I agree with RVM in the fact that the stadium was rockin’ so it didn’t really matter. Plus, we got 42,840 for the game which I don’t think is bad at all.

Hi, my name's Connor and I am addicted to College Football
The game comes down to a pass into the end zone,
which was caught, but hit the turf, and was incomplete. A couple inches higher, and FSU wins.
And the Miami QB threw the winning TD with only two fingers not numb.
As far as the time goes, the last play started with 5 seconds only left. Time ran out, and the ball was caught or not. Also, I think it was fourth down anyway.
