Quick Impressions from the Cincinnati Game

Well that wasn't the best result for what was really the first home game of the year was it?

Being at the game here are my brief impressions, and I'm sure BtD will discuss this game in more detail later this week,

First, I thought the crowd was there for the team and was pretty loud when Cincy had the ball.  A good number of false starts can be attributed to the crowd noise.  And for the safety I really felt the crowd and defense fed off of each other.

Defense, I felt the D actually played well, especially considering the team they were playing.  The defense held Cincinnati to 28 points total and only a TD in the second half, setting up the offense to win it (but alas, see below).  I think the main problem was defensive penetration for the QB had a lot of time to throw and this put a ton of pressure on the corners who had to deal with some excellent throws.  It is tough though and seeing the spread offense in person you can see how it poses such an issue for our up-front defensive line and linebackers.

Offense, hmm they sure looked ready to take control of this game and then went flat with those stupid penalties, and Cincinnati figured something out and put a lot of pressure on Canfield.  Have to admit Canfield has underwhelmed me so far this year, sure he looked fine against PSU but that was PSU.  He needs to release the ball quicker and with more confidence, needs to get the balls down so the receivers don't have to leave their feet so much, and needs to stop looking so much for the Rodgers brothers.  The Rodgers brothers are great, no mistaking, but the team does need to look beyond them if this team is going to do anything this year.  I think I argued a little in a previous thread about we need them as the to go to guys, but this game it seemed overkill and looked to me that Cincy had them keyed in on and didn't have to worry about anyone else (Cincinnati is not bad on defense by-the-way).  We need to expand the field and get Canfield to throw quicker, give him a bit more time (if he gets sacked once he gets jumpy), and start throwing beyond 10 yards.  I again think this offense has a lot of talent (unlike what some of the fans I sat around seem to think) but we need to start getting them involved.

Special teams, well besides Cincinnati never kicking the ball to James it was a solid special teams afternoon.  Hekker has improved over last year a lot.  And the FGs were true all the way from the contact, and Kahut had no problem with the PAT.

Overall, it was not a season ending game by any means but it was disappointing, and there are still a good number of issues to get worked out going into the Pac-10 season. Arizona is a good first conference game, I think, for we have them at home and they are struggling, but once that game happens (a must win conference game IMO) it gets very hard.  The conference could well be up for grabs but that also means going to be a lot of tough games this year, maybe no gimmes (except for WSU, but how about them Cougs!  I take pride in calling that one!).

Go Beavs!

Every loss is disappointing

But Cincinnati is a great team and I think could play with anybody in the Pac-10. We defintely have some kinks to work out before next week, but I like the way our schedule sets up for us and think that we should make another Rose Bowl run. Especially now that USC has already lost.

yep

Next week’s game is going to be pretty darn important. Need to get many of the kinks worked out for that possible run.

And I think we will

Riley is a great coach with a great staff and great players. We just need to utilize them and cut down on mistakes.

hmm, so in response...

I want to say I have no arguments with you here and feel the same way.

As much as this one was disappointing, I’m already amped up again for next week!

I agree with everything you said

It’s important to get our other receivers involved so the opposing defense doesn’t just need to key in on the Rodgers bros in 3rd down situations. We started the season with a long pass so why not throw a couple in every game? We have the speed to get the ball downfield but it seems like we just throw low percentage passes towards the sideline when we want to go deep. The defense played better than I expected against a team that is a supposed offensive powerhouse, obviously I would have like to see some sacks but our line is really missing our ends from last year.

And we have the QB with the arm to go downfield too. I want to see that fire Canfield had coming off the bench last year (ASU game for example), he needs to step up and start leading this team.

Totally

If he can’t, I think it’s time to give the keys to Moevao.

Penalties

The Beavers had some very devastating penalties.

With about 1 minute to play in the first half, Canfield completed a long pass to about the 40 yard line of Cincy and had it called back due to illegal procedure. In addition on the play, Cincy was called for roughing the passer. Without that illegal procedure call, the Beavers almost certainly avoid the last TD by Cincy in the first half.

In the fourth quarter, Cincy has a 3rd and 13 play fall incomplete and got a first down due to a roughing the passer call. Cincy went down and scored a TD after that call.

The Beavers could have won the game if they had avoided just those two penalties.

Cincy is a good team, but the Beavers helped them out. The Beavers need to reduce their penalties.

Plus our offensive line did not block that well with the exception of the first drive of the second half.

Penalties happen

We just got EXTREMELY unlucky with the timing on them.

True

But you can’t not admit they were very costly in this game even if it came down to being unlucky with the timing of them, which I kind-of disagree with since luck, good or bad, had nothing do with it, it was just dumb playing. They had some major penalties and they came at times that totally stopped the momentum of the team (and fans). I totally agree with leon0112 and without that one the Beavs go into half much much closer, and if they come out like they did in the second half they are leading after that opening third quarter scoring drive.

water under the bridge I guess

But those type of stopping the forward momentum penalties need to go away in future games.

Totally

And I think they will go away. Riely’s teams consistently have fewer and fewer penalties as the season goes on.
