UNLV Pre-Game Open Thread

Quizz is on our side. But is that enough to knock off UNLV on the road? Why do you think the Beavers will reverse their trend of failure in early-season non-conference road games tonight?

We're just under seven hours away from kickoff in Las Vegas. I exhanged text messages last night with The VD Special, who is in Vegas, and he said that there is lots and lots of orange and black throughout the city. Being that UNLV doesn't have the most rabid of fan bases, you have to figure that the Beavers will have all the fan support they need to feel right at home.

Which is a good thing, right? Because there has been lots of talk this week about how the Beavers struggle in pre-season non-conference games-- on the road. There was Fresno State. LSU. Boise State. Louisville. Cincinnati. Penn State.

Your prompt: What makes you the most confident that the Beavers will reverse the trend today?

Look for the Game Thread at about 6:00 p.m. tonight. If you're interested in talking about other games of interested until then, head down to Connor's thread below.

GO BEAVERS!

I don’t think UNLV is the same caliber as those other teams. I’m expecting a close game early but think the Beavers will pull away in the 2nd half.

Also

Does anyone know how long the Post game show lasts on KPAM? I didn’t see it in the weekly release.

USC takes an interception back inside the Buckeye 5

and on fourth down Stefon Joshson punches it in for the touchdown.

I’ve seen several of the Michigan-Ohio St. games before, and never have I seen or heard the horseshoe as loud and wild as it was for the Trojans. To answer that the way they did is nothing short of spectacular.

Long pass for more than 50 yeards to Terrell Pryor

And the Buckeyes are on the goal line, and according to review, they are in. 7-7, and the Buckeyes have answered.

Trojans come up short, and punt.

If the Buckeyes withstand that first turnover, and can still get the upper hand, it could be even better for them than if it hadn’t happened.

The game is settling into a slug-fest, but the Buckeyes

are getting the edge in field position. It will be interesting to see how the Beavers’ game parallel’s the UCLA road win (I don’t see the Bruin win as an upset as most did, just a big win for UCLA and the Pac-10) and this game. Favored Pac-10 teams on the road. The difference will be that UNLV will not be nearly as raucous environment as Rocky Top and the Horseshoe.

And USC's Taylor Mays is down, with an accidental knee injury.

The best defensive player in the conference gets rolled up by his own man.

And Ohio St. goes right down the middle to Pryor, to the two yard line. Timeout Trojans! Boy could it change things if Mays can’t come back!

Daniel Herron is stuffed twice, and the Trojans stage a goal line stand, forcing fourth and goal, as the first quarter ends, still 7-7.

Buckeyes settle for a field goal, and a 10-7 lead.

Can you afford to play conservatively in the red zone against the Trojans?

I have no idea who SE Missouri State is

But Cincinnati is rolling it up on them 49 to 3 with about a minute left in the first half. Cincinnati’s QB Pike has almost 230 yards in the first half, but with the lead they have it looks like he is out for the game with the second stringer in there.

Cincy going to have a ton of momentum and confidence coming into Corvallis next week. So here’s hoping we really find our form tonight against UNLV!

Trojan receivers dropping passes

isn’t helping Matt Barkley. Execution errors is the one thing that makes talent irrelevant.

And terrible mechanics on a pass gets it picked off; that’s not on the receivers.

SE Mo

is a FCS team, coming off a 4-8 season, and not expecting to be real strong this year. The won big in their first game, but against a team from a lower level

Funny how we talk about FBS teams playing down against FCS teams for easy wins, but they do the same thing, playing DII or lower teams who are there for a payday, and a slim shot at an upset.

Interesting watching how well

Ohio St. is doing in the battle on the line. They are beating the Trojans at “disciplined” line play. Always easier said than done, but there is a message there for the “good” Pac-10 challengers.

You can’t hide anyone against USC (except Quizz, behind big linemen), and Ohio St. isn’t trying. They think they can win more of those battles than they lose.

Damian Williams JUST out of bounds with the catch!

Trojans have to settle for a 44 yard field goal that hits the crossbar and is no good! Buckeyes dodge a couple of bullets there! Which we know you need to win games like these!

Barkley looking good

and very good as a freshman, driving the Trojans into the redzone in the two minute drill, without timeouts.

This field goal is from 21 yards out, and its good, tieing the game 10-10 at the half.

Hard to say which team really has an advantage at this point! Both I think will take it, and expect to pull it out in the second half.

UTEP down to Kansas 20-0 at halftime

in beloved Sun Bowl stadium.

Meanwhile, after the win, we have Michigan players going into the crowd! In a (slightly) contrasting scene than what we say in Boise.

So much for the halftime surfing update!

On the eve of the opening of the NFL season,

there are 21 Beavers on active rosters or practice squads. Due to getting banged up, Slade Norris is on the Raiders’ practice squad, but could move up if someone get hurt. And Mike Hass is on the Seahawk’s practice squad.

PSU downs Southern Oregon 34-10

Junior quarterback Drew Hubel had a pair of pass plays that went for over 90 yards in the Vikings first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead. On the second play on offense for the Vikings, Hubel threw a short screen to Aaron Woods who broke through the defense and went 96 yards for a touchdown.
