Oregon top 10?

I keep seeing people getting excited about this Oregon team, but I’m having a hard time seeing it. Now I agree Masoli was impressive at the end of the season. He was also a player that was new and unexpected. Wasn’t he third string? Defensive coordinators were slow in adjusting for him and probably underrated him. That won’t happen this year. Also, Oregon had arguably the best offensive line in the Pac 10. They won’t have that this year. Blount is good but I’d like to think Jerimiah Johnson took a lot of the defensive pressure. And Oregon lost some great players on a defense that gave up huge numbers to an OSU offense that was minus the Rodgers brothers and a QB with a bum shoulder. But maybe I’m just crazy.

Their schedule will help them a lot.

They’ve got Purdue, Utah, Washington State, Oregon State, California, USC, and Arizona State at home. I think they will win every game at Autzen except for USC (Who they could beat also). In the long run it’s just my opinion. We’ll see what happens come September.

I know I keep saying this but I also think the coaching change is a bigger question mark than people are making it out to be. Yes of course it is a HUGE advantage to have a new head coach that has already been there and your former head coach is still there as AD.

But at the same time to say UO will be top ten, if not better, this early is pretty overconfident IMO with so many changes (I agree with the ones firewood79 noted above). And throw in a new feel to the whole system there with Kelly not totally in charge of the offense and getting use to the head coach position I would put the Ducks in a total “let’s wait and see” 15 through 20 ranking (or maybe what Tortuga12 is projecting) . Would I be surprised at the end if the Ducks were a solid top ten? Not totally, just a bit I guess. So firewood79 if you are crazy I may well be joining you in the asylum next year!

I think OSU at 23 is a safe bet, but honestly I think they will be better this year. How much better, hmm, good question and I’m not sure.

Oh, and seconds on Jake’s comments below, wow a full 120 team breakdown! Nice work both of you!

Thanks RVM

I think I am downplaying the coaching change a little bit. It’s just that their offense has been so good over the years, and now that their OC is becoming the HC it might only get better. I don’t know if that makes sense, but that was kind of the way I was looking at it.

It makes sense

It is not only you, so not picking on you here! I just think there are some pretty big questions to be answered by the Ducks this year for me to give them a pre-season top ten.

I agree about the offense deal and yes as much I don’t want to think about it it could mean a even better program, but it can also mean that the offense loses some of its edge since now Kelly has to focus on a ton of other things. I think Bellotti really didn’t get as much respect of what he did as head coach as he deserved (and keep in mind this is coming from me and in no way am I a Bellotti fan!). For me this is the crux of my question mark for the team here.

I do think firewood79 above brings up some good questions beyond this too.

Again, excellent work you two on these previews!

You should just flip WSU and Hawaii. At least Hawaii made it to a bowl game last year.
