Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

And here are the official results...USC #1, OSU #4

Here are the official results of the PAC-10 media pre-season poll:

  • USC (28)……………316
  • California (3)….….....277
  • Oregon (1)……..…....250
  • Oregon State…..…...216
  • Arizona State…….....155
  • Stanford…….……….150
  • UCLA………..……….145
  • Arizona………..……..142
  • Washington…..……..  74
  • WSU……………......... 35

Star-divide

Oregon State is a solid #4, safely ahead of Dennis Erickson's Sun Devils. Positions five thru eight are practically a dead heat, and it appears the Cal at Oregon game could be for a trip to the Holiday Bowl. And it is going to be another long season up north, in, well, practically everybody's opinion.

Seems fair.

I think the only teams that leave me really scratching my head are Cal and Arizona. In Arizona’s case, I think that they return a lot and are in a position to be better than UCLA. UCLA has everything to prove this year. A not-so-hot team returns a lot of not-so-hot players and adds some more players that no one really knows what’s up with. I’d say the two teams switch spots at the very least.

As for Cal, I see the wheels falling off early. I don’t know when, but Kevin Riley is who we think he is—a talented meltdown specialist. He’s either kind’ve hot (above room temp at best) or he’s ice cold, tap dancing in the pocket before getting sacked, throwing a pick or otherwise making a questionable mistake. Cal’s a top half team for sure. I guess I’m just surprised to see them at the number two spot with three first place votes.

Totally agree on Cal

The wheels will fall off at some point during the season.

I just don’t know when but they seem like the popular preseason 2nd place pick that’s going to have trouble. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong (I’m wrong a lot). Maybe we’re both wrong. But they don’t look like a team that has the right kind of QB to really go far. Riley just hasn’t caught on. It’s possible I also need to watch more Cal FB before running my mouth but why would I want to do that?

I was also shocked to see Cal ahead of Oregon

They have the talent to win the Pac10 this year, with arguably one of the nation’s most talented players in Jahvid Best. But I still don’t see why people are riding high on a guy (Kevin Riley) who has yet to perform to his talent level.

This is the problem I have with the hype machine and OSU’s lack of respect. This year, I think 4th place is a solid pick and dead on for the question marks we have. But these coaches refuse to look at track record— Cal always underachives, OSU always overachieves. Yet how many times in the last 4 years has Cal been picked ahead of OSU preseason, and how many times has it finished that way?

I do think the Ducks are for real (gag me) but only because of a healthy Masoli. If he is injured for any period of time, this team will be looking at a rough season.

I Agree

They seem to really be the late-season meltdown specialists the past few years, whereas the Beavers finish strong. They started 4-1 last year, only to go 4-3 over their last 7 PAC 10 games, in 2007 they started out 5-0, only to go 1-6 over their last 7 PAC 10 games, and in 2006 they started out 8-1, only to go 1-2 in their last 3 PAC 10 games including a loss at 4-5 Arizona. Despite these past 3 meltdown seasons, Tedford experiences zero heat.

Your comments about the Ducks are right on too, and I’ll take that to another level. If the O-Line is decent AND Masoli stays healthy we’ll be pretty good. Of course if the O-Line isn’t good that will probably lead to Masoli getting hurt anyway.

Any way about it, I’ll bet you one of the 2 Oregon schools finishes above Cal this year.

"When Bellotti attempted to shake the hand of Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson after the game, Robinson offered his left hand. His right was swollen and battered from the Ducks' defense."

I also agree

But to take the other side, for the moment, Cal has the talent and sooner or later you have to think they will follow through on the hype. Looking at their schedule one thing pops out at me that might indicate they could make some noise and they get Oregon and USC early, and actually have a tough schedule on the road in that before the UO game they have to go to Minnesota and although not really a tough game in terms of the opponent it could make it a difficult couple of weeks of travel back and forth.

So if Cal starts strong, like they tend to do, they are in great shape and then coming out of the OSU game (at home for the Bears) they have UA at home, and two road games against Stanford and UW. So it does stack up well for them schedule wise.

But yes schedule wise stacks up very well for UO too, but I still am of the mind you all have a new coach and he needs to prove himself so that does leave a pretty big question mark that should not be underestimated, but again yes the talent is very much there and he of course knows the system so it wouldn’t be a shock if the Ducks did very well this year. But back to Cal and all in all until the Bears and Tedford prove more to me I totally agree that at least one of the two Oregon schools will finish above Cal if not maybe both. But at the same time I guess I just can sort-of see the argument for why they got a lot of votes.

I don't think anyone is disputing that they have talent, that's why they are picked 2nd this year

But my point is, this isn’t the first year they’ve had talent. Or the 2nd. Or the 3rd. They have had talented teams ever since Tedford took over. I, like MCD, am shocked that Tedford has come under as little heat as he has. It seems that Cal fans (or maybe the big wigs) are still believing in 2004. They are living off the high that came from that year, and the disappointment that ended it. I’m not sure, but I think I’ll pose a question to the boys over at CGB to see what they think

I totally agree

Was just stepping outside our box and I can also see why they are getting so much love by the nation. I think Rivals had them at 16 ahead of UO and OSU and a possible Rose Bowl team. I just was saying that it isn’t totally shocking. I think OSU and UO could well be better teams this year, but Cal looks very good on paper and doesn’t have the bigger ?s OSU and UO have right now. Honestly, if I was forced into giving my pre-season ranking (and pre-season rankings really don’t say a whole heck of a lot when you get down to it) I probably would have given the second place nod to Cal.

Tedford’s situation? I guess, but wonder if he has got more than we realize not being immersed in the fan culture there? But again they have done well enough to give everyone a sneak peak of a “what can be” and in my opinion I think maybe a couple more years of no-BCS bowls for Cal and he will feel a lot of heat.

Head over to CGB

I wrote a fan post, and there’s some pretty insightful commentary from those guys. They really do their homework, nerds.

yeah

CGB is pretty absurd but a good read

Yep, if I’m reading it correctly I may have been wrong to think there has been much heat. I’m a little surprised by the love, but (cough cough) many postings made a good bit of sense.

Shouldn’t they be putting more research time and effort into battling robots or some crap? Oh, that’s that other California school…nevermind…

how

can you have OSU in the top tier and not Oregon, did anyone watch that game last year outside of Oregon? Just wondering.

by duckyou on Aug 4, 2009 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I understand you are a USC fan

and you stumble in Corvallis on a regular basis due to not giving them the respect they deserve and now you will backhandedly not give any respect to Oregon? Interesting..

Well, if the results end up the same for for you as they have for us with the disrespect I say take it and run! It has served us well!
