Upgrade/Downgrade - Defensive Ends

We've completed our look at the departing starters on offense, and now we'll shift over to the defense, where only three starters (but 24 lettermen) return. We'll start by looking at defensive end, where Victor Butler and Slade Norris leave as perhaps one of the best defensive end duos in the recent era of Beaver football. Their replacements, though-- Ben Terry and Kevin Frahm-- seem to have the potential to be just as tenacious.... and skilled. What do you think... will Frahm (soph.) and Terry (senior) be an upgrade or downgrade when it's said and done?

Last Year:

Victor Butler

#90 / Defensive- End / Oregon St. Beavers

6-2

238

graduated

Slade Norris

#58 / Defensive- End / Oregon St. Beavers

6-3

245

graduated

This Year:

Kevin Frahm

#74 / Defensive- End / Oregon St. Beavers

6-2

255

sophomore

Ben Terry

#55 / Defensive- End / Oregon St. Beavers

6-3

240

senior

Other defensive ends looking to get time... Gabe Miller, who made the switch from TE, Evan Hill, and Taylor Henry

Time to vote.

Familiar theme

I hesitate to vote downgrade, at the risk of being negative or living on history, especially given the encouraging edge rush I saw this spring, but this is yet another case of big shoes to fill. It’s the corny sounding, “lunchpail” deal yet again, but Slade had that extra element. Victor was a man among boys, and it was apparent early on. That said, I don’t see any reason to believe Ben Terry won’t be in the same class, or that Kevin Frahm can’t get there; the questions are whether they will make the progress that appears reasonable to expect, and when. I do like Gabe Miller a lot, and expect the coaching staff will find ways to get him on the field.
