Joey Wong signs with Rockies

Joey Wong will forgo his Senior year at Oregon State and will sign with the Rockies at 11:00 AM on Thursday morning at the MAC Club in downtown Portland. The signing was announced by Jordan A. Carter, the Vice President and Legal Counsel of the Northwest Sports Management Group.

Wong was selected by the Rockies in the 24th Round and was the 721st player selected overall. After Wong signs his contract he will head to Pasco, Washington, to start his professional career playing for the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League, who begin play Saturday.

The Dust Devils play a 76 game schedule that begins June 20th and ends on September 6th. They play in Gesa Stadium which holds a capacity of 3,655. They are a Short-Season A Classification team. The owner of the team is Major League Hall of Famer, George Brett.

"Even though I didn't get drafted in the rounds that my family and I were shooting for, the Rockies still came up with the dollar figures that we had set before the draft," Wong said. "I just thought it was time to go and start making my trek to the big leagues."

d'oh.

I didn’t see this coming, I thought he was just being a little tough to read. Or maybe he thought this was SC and was just trying to play hardball with OSU, hoping that they’d pay him like they do down in LA.

Best of luck to him and too bad to see him go.

Ouch, this hurts the team

Next year could be a serious down year.. UGH

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

not sure I would go that far

The team will miss his experience, but I believe Carter Bell is an up and coming young player, and I think could be a better and more consistent hitter than Wong. We still have Tommasini too and who knows what type of recruits we have to step in.

Wong was clutch at times at the bat and especially in the field. I’ll never forget that game winning hit against Michigan in the Super Regional game. But I think the team will be okay (as long as not too many leave!).

I'm really looking forward to this.

I think he’s going to become a favorite to those Rockies fans who follow the guys in the minors.

he will make some highlights in the field

not so much with the bats lol.

but he has potential to be a great defensive SS/2B who bats 7/8/9

It seems like he had a lot to game with more time in college. Oh well. We’ll never know. Best of luck to him and hope he wakes his bat up.
