Stanford Series Recap

The Beavers went 2-1 against the Cardinal this weekend, improving to 35-17 on the season and 15-12 in Pac-10 play. Stanford dropped to 30-25 on the season and 13-14 in Pac-10 play.

The Beavers got great pitching performances from Sam Gaviglio and Tyler Waldron. Gaviglio threw a complete game shutout on Friday night, and Waldron went 6.2 innings on Sunday while only giving up one earned run.

With the series win, the Beavers solidified a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and eliminated Stanford from tourney contention. Now let's take a look at Game 1.

In the first game of the series the Beavers won, 5-0. In the first inning, the Beavers got the game started with a triple from Michael Miller. The Beavers would go on to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Michael Miller continued to impress with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. In the seventh inning, Ryan Ortiz scored Michael Miller on a Sac Fly to make the score 4-0. In the eighth inning, Jared Norris scored on a Wild Pitch to make the score 5-0. Sam Gaviglio pitched a complete game shutout, while only giving up three hits.

The time of game was 2 hours and 30 minutes and the attendance was 2,300. Now let's take a look at Game 2... after the break

Star-divide

In the second game of the series the Beavers lost, 7-6. Stanford got things started in the first inning. Joey August had an RBI Triple and he also came around to score to make it 2-0.

In the top half of the second inning, Stefen Romero homered to make the score, 2-1. After that Koa Kahalehoe scored on a Sac Fly from John Tommasini to tie the game at two. The Beavers would take the lead on a RBI ground-rule double from Michael Miller, scoring John Wallace to take the lead 3-2.  In the bottom half of the second inning, Stanford took the lead back with two runs to make the score, 4-3.

In the fourth inning, Stanford got a leadoff triple from Jeff Whitlow. Jeff would come around to score and Stanford had the lead, 5-3. In the top half of the seventh inning, Koa Kahalehoe and John Tommasini both scored on two different Wild Pitches to tie the game at five.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Stanford only got one hit, but it was enough to score two runs and make the score, 7-5. In the eighth inning, Jared Norris doubled and scored on a Wild Pitch to make the score, 7-6. The Beavers came up empty though in the ninth, giving the Cardinal the victory.

The time of game was 3 hours and 15 minutes and the attendance was 2,680. Now let's take a look at Game 3.

In the final game of the series the Beavers won, 5-2, behing the great pitching of Tyler Waldron. Stanford opened the game up in the first inning with a run, but Oregon Satte quickly tied the game up in the second inning. In the third inning, Jared Norris scored on a Sac Fly from Carter Bell, and the Beavers had the lead, 2-1.

The game remained scoreless after that until the top half of the seventh inning when Oregon State got three runs. The inning started with a single from Ryan Ortiz, and by the end of the inning, Ryan Ortiz, Jared Norris, and Koa Kahalehoe all scored to make the score, 5-1.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Wande Olabisi scored on a RBI Single from Adam Gaylord to make the score, 5-2. In the ninth inning, Kevin Rhoderick came in to get the save for the Beavers. Tyler Waldron pitched great, going 6.2 innings and only giving up one earned run.

The time of game was 2 hours and 50 minutes and the attendance was 2,005.

Make sure to tune into the "Road to Omaha" Selection Show on Monday morning at 9:30 AM. It will be broadcast on ESPN. My best guess is that the Beavers will get a two seed, and will be shipped off east somewhere.

Remember to log on to Building the Dam for tournament coverage tonight and Monday. We should have an open thread up for the Selection Show as well. Also, after the teams have been selected you can go to the Baseball America website and participate in the fourth annual Demarini Bracket Challenge. You can play against me and Baseball America writers like Aaron Fitt. The winner gets a brand new Demarini bat. The scoring system is as follows:

• For every winner you pick in the regional round, you get one point, plus another point multiplied by the team's seed.

• For super-regional winners, you get two points for each correct pick, plus another two points multiplied by the team's regional seed.

• If you correctly pick the eight Omaha participants, you get four points, plus another three points multiplied by each team's regional seed.

• And if you pick the national champion correctly, you get eight points, plus another four points multiplied by the team's regional seed.

• The winner is the person with the most points. Any ties will be broken by predictions for the total number of runs scored in the championship game.

                                                            Go Beavs!

One thing that should help us in seeding

We didn’t get swept once this season. That is pretty impressive.

Aaron Fitt of Baseball America

He has us as a three seed going to the Fort Worth Regional. The one seed is TCU, the two seed is Texas A&M, and the four seed is Kent State.

I feel very good about our chances in this regional. I wouldn’t mind it at all.
