Baseball Open Thread: vs. Stanford, Game 3
Stanford prevailed in a wild game last night that included a litany of past balls, wild pitches, and everything else you could possibly imagine. That means that today's decisive game three could likely determine who goes to the tournament and who stays home. It seems that the Beavers could lose today and still qualify, but the Beavers would much rather win the series and leave no doubt rather than head into Selection Monday having lost five of their last six series'.
First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.

After Saturday's Action
Kendall Rodgers of Rivals.com has us as a three seed in the Minneapolis Regional. TCU is the one seed, Minnesota is the two seed, and Wright State is the four seed. I wouldn’t mind playing in the Metrodome.

I just noticed
That our last three losses have been by a score of 7-6. Thought that was kind of wierd.

As long as we're getting hits and scoring runs, I'm fine with the runners left on base.
It’s just frustrating when you can’t score runs and have runners on base all the time.

Kind of agree
It just pains me when we lose to look at all of the those possible runs.

Well sure, it’s a fine line. You wouldn’t want to lose and not have anyone get on base…

Yeah
I say for Regionals we go with Sam on Friday, Waldron on Saturday, Reyes on Sunday, and Peavey on Monday.
I miss CV3000
depends
I want Reyes pitching in the first elimination game, if there is one

I'd rather have Gaviglio and Waldron before him
Even though he’s got experience, he has been to inconcistent.
I miss CV3000
but he has been money in the postseason
we will see

Can't argue with that
I just don’t want an inconcistent pitcher on the mound in an elimination game.
I miss CV3000
New pitcher for the Beavers
Mark Grbavac coming in for Waldron. Tyler goes 6.2 innings, giving up two runs. He threw 85 pitches, with five strikeouts and one walk.

Pretty good regular season
35-17, 15-12 in Pac-10 play.
Now it’s time for the playoffs!
I miss CV3000
I'm interested to see what this team can do in the postseason.
I’m wondering if they have the capabilities to be like OSU teams in the past, who have kicked it into a new gear come Regionals and Super Regionals. I’m pretty sure that none of the #1 seeds want OSU in their regional though… the Beavers could easily play to a #1 seed level.

Yep
And we’ve shown we can throughout the season. It’s those times when we play like we did at Washington that have me worried.
I miss CV3000
I still don't know
How we lost that UW series.
Sure in many ways should have won the WSU, UCLA, and USC series, but have to admit the UW is the one I really scratch my head over.
-RVM
They need some idenity
A player needs to step up and/or the team needs to bond into a strong identity. That is what is missing in many ways from this season so far.
-RVM
seen glimpses
Like when they have a huge inning like against UO. But too often they just don’t seem to turn it up.
But I think they have the talent.
-RVM
Ortiz
would be my bet for the guy who steps up

Phew!
Finally got a series!
But that was a weird series though. Stanford is one of the better defensive teams and looked bad the last couple games. We looked great the first game, then not so good, then today’s game was sort-of just there you know (nothing to exciting and nothing too bad). Plus some of those pitching changes, by both teams, the last couple games went on forever!
But feels VERY nice to finish on the winning side and I’m assuming means we get some more OSU baseball to watch!

Question for Connor...
I haven’t really been following the rest of the Pac-10 this weekend… do any of the games going on affect us? Obviously, by beating Stanford, we basically eliminated a potential bubble team.

Pac-10 Bracketology
Arizona State, Washington State, and Oregon State are in. Arizona is on the bubble and everybody else is out.

So Arizona won.... do any of the games still going on mean that much?

Arizona?
Really?
If Stanford doesn’t have a chance not sure I would think UA could even be a bubble team. They did turn it up a bit at the end, but not much a resume going.
Will be interesting to see how ASU, WSU, and OSU do. I’m thinking they all could be dangerous. Maybe not the most “look out for them” scary (except for ASU of course) but WSU and OSU could quietly sneak up on teams. Thoughts?
-RVM
OSU definitely has the potential, but I’m sure you could say that about every team that ends up in the bracket. Not every team plays at their best in the post-season… it’s just that Oregon State has the history of doing that in the past few years.

They have an outside shot
According to Kendall Rodgers they had an outside shot if they swept Oregon. Which they did.
Like you, I thought they had the same chances as Stanford, but I’m going to listen to the guy who does it professionaly.
I miss CV3000
I think Wazzu will fold
I don’t see them getting out of the first round. We might be able to get to Omaha, but we can’t leave as many runners on base and our pitching has to get better. Don’t get me wrong, Sam and Waldron are great, but we’ll need to have more than two pitchers to win it all. I also think ASU has a great chance to win it all.
I miss CV3000
could be right about WSU
But they could surprise a little bit in their regional, give teams a fit but probably not moving on.
I don’t know about ASU, just don’t know if they anything to really bring beyond a great pitcher and one very good one. We’ll see, I would think they should make it to Omaha but don’t know, just a feeling.
Don’t count Reyes out yet. He seems to do better in non-league play for whatever reason. But overall I agree with your assessment of our chances.
-RVM
In his postseason play (albeit somewhat limited)
Reyes has been money.
