Baseball Open Thread: at UCLA, Game 1
via grfx.cstv.com
Well, this should be an interesting series. UCLA is in the middle of a disappointing season but is 7 and 3 over their last 10 teams with an impressive sweep of a weak UW team but is also coming off a tough loss to UC Riverside (6 to 17).
Oregon State as we all know are coming off a very disappointing series loss to USC and are trying to keep pace with ASU and break away from WSU in the Pac.
Here are the breakdowns for today's game (more here):
Oregon State (23-9, 8-4) vs. UCLA (17-20, 9-6)
RHP Tyler Waldron (3-2, 4.81) vs. RHP Gerrit Cole (3-3, 3.51)
April 24, 2009 • 6 p.m. PT • Los Angeles, Calif. • Jackie Robinson Stadium
Rivals.com's Mr. Kendall Rogers has this to say about UCLA's rotation in response to a question about who can challenge ASU with Leake pitching:
In Pac-10 play? the only team that I think can match up with them from a pitching standpoint is UCLA with Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer in the weekend rotation. Those two freshmen for the Bruins are absolute studs, but we'll see how the teams shape up when they play. Other than that, nobody in the Pac-10 and very few teams nationally will match up well with them on Friday and Saturday of a series.
Hmm, okay, so let's see what they can bring, Go Beavs!

This should be a fun weekend
I’ve always liked Pat Casey and the Beavers, although this weekend they are the enemy! I’d feel much better about our chances this weekend if Casey Haerther didn’t have a broken toe, but hopefully he can make an impact as a pinch hitter. I’ll be at all three games this weekend and will have all my thoughts on them either on Bruinsnation, my UCLA baseball twitter (twitter.com/uclabaseball) or here, where I’ll be stopping in for the weekend. Best of luck this weekend…but not too much luck.

Scoreboard Watch
Arizona-0, Stanford-0, Bottom of the 1st
Washington-11, Oregon-1, Bottom of the 7th
yep, and the team was rolling there in the beginning
I know the Beavs go through these spells but these losses are starting to add up. Need to get things back on course this weekend and take this series.

How's Joey Wong fielded this year?
I know early in the year he racked up some errors and tonight he committed one that led to two earned runs. He also had two other plays that should have been made, but weren’t errors. Has this been an issue all year or was it just an early season thing that popped up again in one bad game?

didn't you ask this before?
He has been excellent in the field after those early in the year miscues. Been playing very well in my opinion. I thought last night was a really weird one for him, I mean that one error I think was with two outs too and really is a key reason I think we lost (one of three or four reasons from that yucky game, but a big one) for that also shifted everything into UCLA’s dugout for momentum and confidence.
So, yes I think “was it just an early season thing that popped up again in one bad game.”

I asked it early in the year when he was in the midst of his tough start
I had no idea if it had continued in the middle part of the year or not. Thanks for the info.

Yep, thought you did sometime!
Again, except for that rough start to the year he has been really good until last night. I expect him to be fine. Least of my worries right now.

More Runs
I don’t care how many runs we get in the first three innings. We have got to score more runs in the 2nd half of the game.
Yes!
Need to keep the foot on the pedal and be aggressive, I don’t know it almost seems like they get some runs and think they can sit on the lead a bit. Of course the other teams and pitchers have a lot to say about it, but last night they exploded out of the gate and totally shut down on offense. It was a good pitcher but still had him on the ropes I thought.

Jorge Reyes was in front of us last night
He’s a great guy. So long as he’s not pitching against us, like on Sunday, I’ll be rooting for him.

One thing that had a major impact on the game
was the horrific umpire. He didn’t favor either side, which was nice, but he was so inconsistent that it bordered on comical. As a result, especially late in the game when he was at his worst, the batters had no idea where the strike zone was. Late in the game it played to our advantage because we were ahead, but it was frustrating for anyone at the stadium, from players to coaches to fans.
