Hawaii in the Offing
Oregon St. has made an addition to upcoming football schedules, with a trip to Hawaii in 2011, for a December third game, a post Civil War date. And the Warriors will return the game with a visit to Reser Stadium to face the Beavers in 2014, for a game on Sept. 13.
The 2011 trip allows the Beavers a 13th. game in the regular season.
The Beavers hosted Hawaii in 2008, winning 45-7, the return for a December 2006 game, also won by Oregon St., 35-32, in a similar home and home arrangement.

Meh. I’m not so thrilled with this. I know it’s for recruiting more than S.O.S. but still, if we’re going to do a non-Boise State WAC team, why can’t it be Nevada or Fresno? San Jose? Hawaii’s time has passed…
You want the Beavs playing at Fresno again?
I think Hawai’i is a much better deal than that for the team!
I think also the recruiting angle is important.

Plus
Recruiting and not a bad place to visit (or so I hear). If I were made of money and could travel to see the Beavers away from Reser, Hawai’i doesn’t sound like a bad trip…
But...
I’m kind of with Arby. It’s sort of a “been there, done that” type of deal.
Because playing at Frenso is a **** hole?
I’m not sure I’m all that personally sold on the idea overall, but don’t really see the huge difference playing them or playing a Nevada or San Jose. Nevada might be a good change of pace.
If we want to go different and new, I don’t know who is one the schedule for those years already, but personally I like the idea of pulling any notion of playing TCU next year and stick them in for the Hawai’i slot for 2011 (or a BYU or a West Virginia or a Colorado), someone like that.

Colorado State, Utah (again), Iowa State, OK State, Ohio, Mich. State, Texas Tech...
The list goes on. I can think of many beatable teams (note-I’m not saying all aforementioned teams are pushovers, but they ARE beatable) outside of the WAC that I’d rather watch our guys play, simply for the variety of match-up.
Maybe if I were more of a roadtripper I’d be into the Hawaii games. It’s a great destination, sure, but it’s a sinking program that usually has some sneaky home cooking going. Plus didn’t a Beaver player get stabbed there before the Oahu Bowl in 98?
"outside of the WAC that I’d rather watch our guys play"
Agreement here, I just think when looking at it though if we are talking just the WAC Hawai’i is good as anything really. BSU, been there and done that lose-lose situation, Nevada? Hmm, okay that might be not a bad team to play. Beatable but high enough caliber to make it a respectable game and wouldn’t be a total shame to lose to. Fresno State, sorry I just don’t like that program and don’t want to play them ever again (talk about lose-lose). Then you get a bunch of teams that overall seems to me to be like playing Portland State.
But if we are talking about taking it a bit out of the norm and looking to other conferences, yes lots of choices out there better than Hawai’i in my opinion.

I'm glad we agree on Nevada. That's a good "should-win" OOC game.
I do disagree that it’d be a TOTAL shame to lose to them though. They lost to Notre Dame. NOTRE DAME!
I say Fresno State because they’re always tough AND I think the bloom is off that rose and there could be a nice revenge factor. I mean come on—wouldn’t you LOVE to watch the Beavs kick the mustache off of Pat Hill’s dirty face?!
Nevada wouldn’t be all that yucky (if it was a good game), especially if you are talking about on the road. They have some offensive going that earns a bit of respect. So not not a TOTAL shame, and if it was then we shouldn’t even consider scheduling that level team because we could lose (UNLV?).
I just don’t like the FS program, so no I could care less if we never played them again. They aren’t that good, talk about lack of follow through. It is much worse of a lose lose than Boise State in my opinion.

Nevada's good, but still a team Oregon State should handle.
UNLV was scary. We made them look good, or at least competitive.
it's a fun place to play at for the players
kinda like a vacation after the Pac-10 season, especially if Hawaii sucks.

OSU has a lot of Hawaiians too
homecoming game for them, just like our reasoning for playing TCU in Texas next year (did this end up going through)?

I’m sure it’s ultimately a recruiting tool. To get a kid off of that rock, away from family, you’ve got to give him a shot to come back and play in front of family at least once. The Hawaii game gives us that edge in recruiting I suppose.
This way we can say, “Hey, come out here to Oregon State. We’ll get you educated, possibly to the NFL. And most of all, we’ll get you back to Hawaii to play in front of family.”
Why would you rather play BSU?
The current system doesn’t reward teams or playing BSU. There is enough strength of schedule in the Pac-10 that the Beavers really just need to be scheduling 3 patsies to get ready for conference play.
I’m an idealist who simply wants a strong, entertaining schedule. Three wasted games against patsies?! At home?! This is the PAC-10, man, NOT the SEC. We go on the road and play tough games and occasionally host some too. Sure, it’s not in the best interest of the business side of college football, but it’s collegiate athletics (almost) at its essence. Screw the Floridas of the world, scheduling the Washington Generals (Citadel) year in and year out.
I want to play BSU because it’s a good game and a regional competitor.
I'd rather see more games against other BCS conferences
even if we lose ’em. :)

I agree with you. We just need to figure out more home-home matchups.
I’m aware of where we’re at and that we’re not going to land home and homes with traditional powers with giant fan bases like Penn State, LSU, Texas or Florida, but I don’t think we should be in the business of doing one and dones on the road with those folks either.
More home and homes with some teams from the Big East, ACC and other conferences willing to fly west for a game. I’m done waiting on the SEC to man up and start playing non-conf. out this way.
For one thing,
the Hawaii trip is an EXTRA game, not in place of a game against someone else, so it is a good recruiting tool, not just in Hawaii, but for others coming to OSU who might enjoy a few days in December in Hawaii, and it doesn’t preclude any games with other teams.
It’s also and EXTRA TV game.
The return game gives the Beavers a some times hard to find home non-conference game, and it is probably still very winable, but MUCH better than a Big Sky team as far as SOS.
This is sort of a have your cake and eat it too deal.

Go Beavs!
I DO love the late night live games, especially when the Beavs are involved.
So I gotta admit, this isn’t a complete bust for me.
The game should be national on ESPN too
generally they televise Hawaii’s late season games when they get a team from a BCS conference in there (I believe this year it was Wisconsin).

I want to schedule an SEC team
I don’t care which one, provided it’s a home and home and not a “paycheck” game.
There needs to be more Pac-10 vs. SEC games.
Side Note: I would LOVE a “Pac-10/SEC Challenge” type of thing. They could even have it carry over to basketball and possibly baseball as well…
The matchup would be DYNAMITE, for instance next year it’d be:
Oregon-Florida
Arizona-Alabama
Oregon State-LSU
Stanford-Ole Miss
USC-Tennessee
Cal-South Carolina
Washington-Arkansas
UCLA-Auburn
Arizona State-Kentucky
Washington State-Mississippi State
Could you imagine the ratings it would get, especially the top games?

I love the challenge idea.
After all, the SEC pretty much does a Sun Belt Challenge every year — why not us?

Sounds good, but good luck!
Like someone else said, the SEC would never venture west… there’s a chance they might LOSE a game and not be (falsely) ranked in the Top 10/25!!!

Tennessee played at UCLA....
idk, they probably wouldn’t do it due to the fact that a loss hurts NC hopes, but man this would be such a huge ratings-fest maybe they think it’d be worth it.

The Vols have a home and home with Oregon starting next year as well
They are the exception to the rule, and have been for years, as far as playing both intriguing NC opponents, and also teams from the west.
The Big-East is more made to order for OSU for some more NC games, like the series that ends after next year’s Louisville game. Those teams have five dates to fill, and most have more comparable sized home crowds, so a home and home can make more sense financially.

Go Beavs!
I personally hate the idea of playing TCU and Boise State in the same year
We need to start getting smart about our scheduling. Would I love to see us play quality competition in the non-conference? Absolutely. But you know what I would love even more, not being 1-2 to start every damn year, and get some national recognition. I hate the SEC/Big 12 for doing what they do, but it seems to me it works. Why can’t we try going 7-1, 8-0, be ranked in the top 15, and get exposure. 5-3 doesn’t cut it, and while it would be awesome to see us play TCU and Boise St (and I would go to both games next year) I want us to start getting the respect we deserve
