Game 7 Preview and Open Thread: Cal State Bakersfield
While you are filling out your Bowl Selections and watching the NFL games, why not tune in for some Beaver Basketball?
Cal State Bakersfield @ OSU - 2:00 P.M. - Gill Coliseum - Listen on KPAM 860
The Beavers enter today's game with a record of 3-3 after defeating Colorado on Friday night.
The Beavers were down 5 at halftime against the Buffaloes before the Beavers came back. Oregon State outscored Colorado by 10 points in the 2nd Half en route to their 74-69 win.
Calvin Haynes and Seth Tarver lead the way for the Beavers, with Haynes recording 19 points and Tarver recording 14.
The most amazing stat of the game came in the last four minutes for the Beavers. Oregon State went 10 for 10 from the Free Throw Line in those final minutes to ice the victory. In the first twenty minutes of action, Oregon State went 9 for 16 from the Charity Stripe. If the Beavers can continue to hit their Free Thorws, then we have a serious shot at the NIT or NCAA's.
The Road Runners come into the game with a record of 1-4 after defeating Utah Valley and losing to Santa Clara, UCLA, Cal State Northridge, and UC Riverside. Trent Blakley and Donavan Bragg have lead the way for CSBU, with Blakley averaging 17.2 points per game so far and Bragg with 11.8. In my mind though, the key to this game will be controlling Forward Santwon Latunde. Santwon has averaged 9.4 points per game so far this season.
Cal State Bakersfield is a Divison I Independent school.
Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM at Gill Coliseum.

How's it going Connor?
I’ve been the worst bball fan this year. Had no idea we had a game today

We're playing well
A little worried that we would overlook these guys to Nebraska next Saturday, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

That's good
Still haven’t fully recovered from Thursday. I don’t think I’ll recover until spring practices start

I'm 95% recovered
It hurts like Hell, but I love this time of year. College Basketball picking up, Bowl Games, Christmas. And we should have a good test against BYU in the Vegas Bowl.
Besides, it’s not like we lost by 27.

I’m not even 50% recovered. We should have beaten them

I know
But if you think about it, we should of beaten USC too. And probably Arizona. It’s just part of Sports.

Burton has been a pleasant surprise this year. I thought he might be a support player, but he has definitely been one of the better players so far

Not even close is it?
Seems like the team is starting to click a bit more now. Especially the frosh.
What is going on with Schaftenaar?

Not close at all
We are looking really good, but CSBU is BAD.
Joe Burton is just flat out playing Roeland. Maybe something happened between him and Coach Rob, but I’ve been very impressed with Burton so far.

True
But remember Sacramento State earlier last month? I like this result MUCH better even if the team isn’t that good!
Burton, yes I totally agree but still Roland isn’t getting much time and not making much of it anyway to work himself back in the starting rotation. I mean was it just me or did he look unmotivated and unhappy against Colorado Friday?

I know, I know
Just saying.
I didn’t really notice Roeland looking unmotivated and unhappy, but then again, I wasn’t looking for it. I guess we’ll just have to see how it plays out. I don’t want to sound all mean, but if the team continues to click with him on the bench I think he’ll just have to live with it.

Yep, no arguments from me, just curious since it is a bit strange in a way. But he seems to run a bit hot and cold and started slow last year. But yes it seems to be working well the last couple games with the freshman in there, and I’m okay with it too

Still, it looks like CR is using him in a different way than last year. He’s not running the offense through Roeland. Looks to me like CR wants him to become more of a traditional post player, and Roeland just isn’t as effective down low as Burton is.

That makes sense, Roeland has always struggled in that traditional post player role.

I’m thinking that Coach Rob just wants to open things up with his new athletes, and Roeland isn’t really working into that plan. He’s definitely not slowing things down as much this season— and it doesn’t seem like he needs to with guys like Cunningham and Burton mixed in with the likes of the Tarvers, Haynes, etc.

Great game for the Beavers
CSBU is really bad, but we didn’t overlook them and kept the pedal on the whole time. Now we’ve got 5 days to prepare for a huge game at Nebraksa. The Cornhuskers are 5-1. This game will tell a lot about our tourney chances come March.
