Game 10 Preview and Open Thread: Mississippi Valley State

Miss Valley St Delta Devils at Oregon St. Beavers, Dec 19, 2009 7:00 PM PST

Oregon State (4-5) vs. Mississippi Valley State (1-9) - 7pm, Gill Coliseum - Radio on KPAM 860

After getting above .500 for the first time in a long time last week, the Beavers dropped two games on their road trip to Chicago and are now 4-5 on the year with two games left before conference play begins on New Years Eve.

More on the game from the Oregon State release:

The Oregon State men's basketball team returns to action this weekend as the Beavers host Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7:00 p.m. Oregon State enters the contest with a mark of 4-5 on the season after dropping a 63-61 decision at the hands of Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday. Seth Tarver led the way for Oregon State in the loss with 17 points as Calvin Haynes added 15 points for the Beavers.

The Oregon State defense has been the driving force for the Beavers in the early part of the season, led by Tarver, who leads the league and ranks second in the nation with 3.4 steals per game. Oregon State is holding opponents to just 39.2 percent from the floor and just 28.0 percent from behind the arc.

Mississippi Valley State enters with a mark of 1-9 on the season after the Delta Devils fell to Oregon, 79-51, on Wednesday. Julius Cheeks is the only Mississippi Valley State player in double figures, averaging 10.5 points per game.

Again, tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and you can listen to the game on KPAM 860 in the Portland Area.

Anyone want to talk Bowl Games?

I put 34 Confidence Points on Fresno State and they just lost to Wyoming. Now I’ve got 27 Points on Rutgers.

Pretty bad 1st Half for the Beavs

MVSU is terrible, and we are only up by two. We better have a dominating performance in the final twenty minutes or CR is going to catch a lot of heat.

Thanks, Connor!

Tooooo busy with Xmas prep, what with the bowl game coming Tuesday, to help with coverage! Glad we got a much needed win (of course every win is a much needed one)!

No problem

Next time you can tell me earlier and I will do play-by-play. Got kinda tired at the end after watching Football all day.

Signs of improvement

Even though MVSU is terrible, a 14 point win should do a lot for this team’s confidence. It’s also great to see that we scored 74 points. We are going to need to do that consistently if we are going to compete in the Pac-10.

I agree for the most part, but still worried about some of the lackluster play against a weak team. They only led by two at half and again were pulling away and let MVSU catch up a bit and close the gap (went up double digits and I think MVSU was able go close to five points) in the second half. But did finally end up taking control, which is good.

I think the Fresno State game is going to be an important one for confidence.

See above for my thoughts at Halftime

That last post was more on my thoughts of the 2nd Half. But I agree with you for the most part, as we need to step on team’s throats while they are down. (Kinda like the Football team.) However, Basketball is also a game of runs. So when they got back within five I was happy to see them put them away for good in the final couple of minutes.

Yep, and again we are mostly in agreement I think, but with a team like MVSU I just rather see them jump on them early and distance themselves nicely, and if MVSU makes a bit of a run it is against OSU’s bench in the last ten minutes of the game when the Beavs are up 20+. But as we both have said winning is good and coming off the UIC loss this is a better result to be sure. Just these last few games have made me too uncomfortable going into conference play. So this game is a just part of a package of disappointment with me right now. I’m hoping to see something positive against Fresno State and this MVSU was the first one of righting the ship.

I try to keep them at a minimum

Just when we lose to team’s who’ve lost six in a row.
